Krueger's Record-Setting Day Highlights Pipers in Split With Bennies

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University softball team's 2022 home finale pitted them against Saint Benedict (DH) on Sunday. The Pipers dropped a 9-3 decision in game one, before Kira Krueger's record-breaking 11th hit by pitch of the season highlighted a 2-0 victory over the Bennies in game two.

Hamline ends the day with a 16-12, 7-8 MIAC record, while Saint Benedict sees their record go to 22-5, 10-3 MIAC.

Megan Rubbelke, Kira Krueger, Amber Peterson, Theresa Klinnert, and Dana Rosbacka were honored prior to the game for senior day.

Saint Benedict 9, Hamline 3

A three-run first inning gave the Bennies enough cushion to lead from start-to-finish, but the Pipers weathered the storm over the next four frames and stayed within striking distance with a 4-2 deficit after five innings. The sixth inning saw Saint Benedict capitalize on Hamline defensive miscues, which resulted in their five unearned runs in the frame that pushed their lead to 9-2. The Pipers narrowed the score to 9-3 in the bottom half of the sixth, when Kira Krueger scored on a passed ball.

Jenna Rubbelke led Hamline at the plate with a 2-for-4 outing.

The Bennies pounded 14 hits against the Pipers' seven. Dana Rosbacka pitched the opening 4 2/3 innings before Theresa Klinnert came in for the final 2 1/3 for Hamline. The dynamic duo combined to give up just two earned runs in the contest. Rosbacka finished with five strikeouts.

Hamline 2, Saint Benedict 0

The Pipers notched a fourth-inning run behind back-to-back Bennies errors that scored Amber Peterson. Kira Krueger followed that with her single-season school record 11th hit by pitch in that frame.

The sixth inning saw Jenna Rubbelke lay down a bunt single, steal second base, advance to third base on Amber Peterson's sacrifice bunt, and score off Megan Rubbelke's bunt single to push the score to 2-0.

Kira Krueger went the distance in the pitching circle. She gave up six hits, and struck out four batters.

Hamline notched three hits in the contest thanks to Jenna Rubbelke, Megan Rubbelke, and Savannah Johnson.

The Pipers will travel to St. Olaf (DH) on Tuesday, April 26 for a 3:30 p.m. game.
