SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team hosted St. Olaf (DH) in a Wednesday-night MIAC battle at CHS Field, where they dropped a pair of low-scoring games by scores of 5-2, and 2-0.
The Pipers fall to 9-21, 3-11 MIAC, while the Oles improve to 14-12, 8-6 MIAC.
St. Olaf 5, Hamline 2
The Oles kicked things off with a trio of first-inning runs en route to a 3-0 lead before the Pipers registered their only two runs of the game in the bottom half of that inning. Mac Enlow reached on a fielder's choice, before Owen Christenson singled to put runners on the corners. This set up Finn Melchior's RBI-single that scored Enlow, while Christenson also scored via a mishandled ball by the St. Olaf outfield to narrow the margin to 3-2.
The Oles closed the game's scoring with a pair of third-inning runs thanks to an RBI-double from Matthew Kulesa that sent home Joey Glampe (walk), and an RBI-single from Evan Hammonds that drove-in Kulesa to make the score 5-2.
Jonah Smallfield threw one inning in the pitching start for Hamline before Will Tzavaras and Ryan Conn came in relief. They collectively surrendered eight hits, five runs, and struck out eight.
The Hamline offense notched six hits, led by Cullen Buck's 2-for-3 outing.
St. Olaf 2, Hamline 0
Pipers starting pitcher Zach Branson took a no-hitter into the eighth inning, where Matthew Muller broke it up with a one-out single. The Oles would notch one more hit, and capitalize on a Pipers error that resulted in a 2-0 lead in that inning. Hamline pitcher Braden Schneider came in relief with two outs, and got his team out of the inning.
The Pipers managed to load the bases in the ninth inning without recording a hit in the frame. Owen Christenson and Tyler Johnson were each hit by a pitch, while Finn Melchior walked. It didn't result in any runs as the Pipers stranded three to end the game.
Branson allowed two hits, two runs, and struck out eight over 7 2/3 innings of work, before Schneider allowed just one hit over the final 1 1/3 frames. Jacob Fickenscher allowed five hits, no runs, and struck out nine over eight innings on the pitching rubber for St. Olaf, before Will Wamre and Jonah Smithson (save) threw the final frame.
Stephen Schmidt went 2-for 3 at the plate for a Hamline offense that had five hits. The Oles mustered just three hits in the contest.
The Pipers will travel to Carleton (DH) on Friday, April 29 for a 2:30 p.m. start.
