Pipers Split With Norse in Home Opener

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team's 2022 home opener pitted them against Luther (DH) on Saturday afternoon. Every member of the Pipers' starting rotation saw action in game one, where they collectively notched a shutout in a 6-0 decision over the Norse. Luther returned the favor in game two with a 16-0 victory over the Pipers.

The split sends Hamline's record to 7-11, while Luther ends the day with a 13-9 mark.

Hamline 6, Luther 0 (7 Innings)

The second inning resulted in a pair of Pipers runs courtesy of Braeden Bourne, whose triple scored Tyler Johnson (hit by pitch) to make the score 1-0. Bourne scored on the ensuing throw to extend the margin to 2-0.

Hamline duplicated that performance in the third inning, when Max Gerstner walked and scored on Mac Enlow's double to make the score 3-0. Owen Christenson pushed the score to 4-0 when he singled, and later scored on Tyler Johnson's bases-loaded single.

Christenson added another run in the fifth inning, where he led off with a walk. He advanced to second on Caden Erickson's bunt single, and later scored on a throwing error provoked by Avery Nelson's fielder's choice to make it 5-0. The sixth inning resulted in the Pipers' final run, as Bourne led off with a single and later scored on Avery Liebren's bases-loaded single to put the score at 6-0.

Bourne went 2-for-3 with a triple and a pair of runs scored for the Pipers. Zach Branson, Jonah Smallfield, Ryan Conn, Conor Mestemacher, and Braden Schneider combined to strikeout eight batters in the shutout for Hamline.

Luther 16, Hamline 0 (7 Innings)

The Norse jumped on the Pipers for a seven-run first inning, which proved to be enough cushion in a 16-0 victory.

The Pipers mustered just four hits against Luther's 17 in the contest.

Cullen Buck, Gerstner, Gavin Renwick, and Colton Peters each notched a hit for the Pipers.

Parker Leipzig, Dan Fredericks, Xavier Bembnister, Will Tzavaras, and Hayden Ring all saw time on the pitching mound for the Pipers.

The Pipers will travel to Concordia (Minn.) (DH) on Monday, April 11 for a 2:30 p.m. start time.
