SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's volleyball team squared-off against Grinnell and No. 12 Northwestern (Minn.) in a triangular match at Hutton Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Pipers went 0-2 on the day with a 3-1 (25-15, 13-25, 25-23, 25-19) loss to Grinnell followed by a 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-18) defeat to No. 12 Northwestern (Minn.).
The losses send Hamline's record to 1-7. Grinnell improved to 5-1, while Northwestern stayed undefeated at 6-0.
Grinnell 3, Hamline 1 (25-15, 13-25, 25-23, 25-19)
The Pioneers led from start-to-finish in their 25-15 victory in set one. The Pipers rebounded with a 25-23 win in the second set despite being outhit .226 - .125. The score was tied on six occasions throughout the set, which included a 23-23 tie that was broken by Faith Johnson's back-to-back kills that iced a 25-23 victory for Hamline. That score flipped in favor of Grinnell in set three that gave them a 2-1 match lead. The Pipers hit .259 in set four, but it wasn't enough in a 25-19 loss.
Jenna Rubbelke led the Pipers with 23 digs, while Lindsay Eckelman contributed nine kills to her stat line. Kaitlyn Kotek posted 36 assists for Hamline. Hayley Taka led all players with 14 kills for Grinnell.
Northwestern (Minn.) 3, Hamline 0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-18)
The Pipers never led in the match. Faith Johnson paced Hamline with eight kills, while Jenna Rubbelke led the way with nine digs and a pair of service aces. Katrina St. Clair added 19 assists and two blocks.
Northwestern hit .391 in the match, which included a stellar .577 mark in the opening set. They were led by Marley Aune's 10 kills. Hannah Gadient and Grace Strickfaden each notched 17 assists for the Eagles.
The Pipers will travel to UW-Superior on Wednesday, September 14 for a 7 p.m. match.
