Pioneers and Prairie Wolves Sweep Pipers on Day Two of Macalester Tournament

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The backend of the Macalester Tournament pitted the Hamline University women's volleyball team against UW-Platteville and Nebraska Wesleyan on Saturday. The Pipers were victims of 3-0 losses to the Pioneers and Prairie Wolves.

Hamline falls to 0-3 on the season. UW-Platteville moved to 3-0 with their victory over Hamline, while Nebraska Wesleyan improved to 2-2.

UW-Platteville 3, Hamline 0 (25-16, 25-15, 25-19)

The Pioneer's stellar hitting in the latter part of the first two frames engineered their efficient .333 attack percentage in the first set, and .242 figure in the second session. The Pipers were within striking distance of the Pioneers midway through each set. UW-Platteville broke an 11-11 tie in the opening set with a 6-0 run highlighted by two kills from Emma Carlson. It gave the Pioneers a 17-11 lead, which proved to be enough cushion in a 25-16 victory.

UW-Platteville led from start-to-finish in a 25-15 win in the second set, highlighted by another 6-0 run midway through the frame engineered by Carlson's two kills.  The Pipers couldn't find a rhythm in the third set as 12 of their 19 points in the frame occurred off Pioneer errors. Hamline led 14-13 before a 7-0 Platteville run secured them a 25-19 win in the third.

Jenna Rubbelke tied for a game-high 14 digs for Hamline, and did her best to tame a Pioneer offense that hit .248 in the match. Carlson led UW-Platteville with 11 kills.

Nebraska Wesleyan 3, Hamline 0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-17)

Addie Thomas and Nyah Chambers were lethal in the opening set for Nebraska Wesleyan. Their five kills apiece in the frame highlighted a squad that hit .343 in the 25-19 win. The Prairie Wolves duplicated their .343 hitting mark in the second set, where they jumped to a 9-0 lead that gave them enough cushion in a 25-12 win.

Sydney Hauptman's seven kills in the third set propelled Nebraska Wesleyan to a 25-17 win over the Pipers in set three.

Rubbelke notched a game-high 16 digs for Hamline, while Lauren Wilborn led the way with eight kills. Kaitlyn Kotek notched 19 assists for the Pipers. Addie Thomas finished with a game-high 17 kills for a Nebraska Wesleyan team that hit .330 in the match.

The Pipers will host UW-Stout at Hutton Arena on Wednesday, September 7 at 7 p.m.
