SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Pipers women's hockey team looked for a weekend sweep of St. Catherine in a Saturday-afternoon road game at Drake Arena, which is actually geographically closer to Hamline than Tria Rink. The Pipers fell short of a weekend sweep, as they settled for a 3-3 (OT) tie. The shootout saw the Wildcats secure a 2-0 win, which gave them two points in the MIAC standings. Hamline earned one point with the shootout loss.
The Pipers move to 7-7-1, 6-1-1 MIAC, while the Wildcats see their record go to 9-4-2, 3-3-2 MIAC.
Hamline 3, St. Catherine 3 (OT)
The score reflected the up-and-down play in the contest, as St. Catherine held a slim 24-21 edge in shots. It didn't stop Hamline from taking a 1-0 lead, as Cheyenne Abear did the honors at 2:36 of the first period off a feed from Emme Nelson and Elizabeth Valley. It proved to be the Pipers' lone lead of the contest as the Wildcats outscored them 2-0 in the second period behind goals from Laura Denchfield at 16:02 that tied things at 1-1, and Paige Loidolt at 19:12 that gave them a 2-1 advantage.
The Pipers returned the favor as they outscored the Wildcats 2-1 in the third, which started with Haley Eder-Zdechlik at 2:00Â that tied the score at 2-2. Isabel Burt recorded St. Kate's lone tally of the frame at 4:12, which gave them a 3-2 cushion before Molly Meyers' goal at 11:27 evened things at 3-3.
Airika Penney made 21 saves in net for Hamline, while Elizabeth Kubicek stopped 18 shots for the Wildcats.
The Pipers will host Saint Benedict at Tria Rink on Friday, January 20 at 7 p.m.
