Pipers Stun No. 9 Pointers On The Road 3-2 (OT)

STEVENS POINT, WIS.—The Hamline University men's hockey team made the four-hour trip east to No. 9 UW-Stevens Point on Friday night. Pipers senior goalie Kevin Lake came through with a career-high 47 saves, which tamed a Pointer squad that held a 49-23 advantage in shots. Eleven of Hamline's shots occurred in the third period and overtime, which helped them come back from a late 2-1 deficit behind Carson Simon's game-tying goal at 14:58 of the third, and Bronson Adams' game-winning tally at 00:56 of overtime that sealed a 3-2 (OT) victory.

Hamline improves to 6-6-1, while UW-Stevens Point falls to 8-2-3. This marks Hamline's first triumph of the Pointers since a 2-1 decision on November 3, 2017 in Stevens Point. The Pointers are four years removed from winning the NCAA Division III National Championship, as they earned that crown in 2019.

The Pointers prevailed with an 18-5 advantage in shots throughout the opening period, but that didn't stop the Pipers from taking a 1-0 lead behind Ike Taraszewski at 17:50 from Brandon Bissett and Joe Collins.

Andrew Poulias gave UW-Stevens Point the spark they needed, as his power-play goal at 15:41 of the second period knotted things at 1-1.

Lake was busy throughout the opening five minutes of the third period, as he converted seven saves in that time to keep things at bay. Conor Witherspoon put an end to that with a tally at 5:10 that gave the Pointers a 2-1 lead.

The final 10 minutes of the third period resulted in a 6-5 shots edge for Hamline. Carson Simon converted one of those attempts at 14:58 off an assist from Sebastien Vaillancourt and Scott Moyer that tied the game at 2-2.

Bronson Adams converted his first goal as a member of the team off a wrist shot from 20 feet out that fooled Pointer goalie Ryan Wagner at 00:56 of overtime, which propelled the squad to a 3-2 (OT) victory. Sam Dabrowski was credited an assist on the game-winner.

Wagner made 20 saves in net for UW-Stevens Point.

The Pipers will host UW-Eau Claire at Tria Rink on Friday, January 13 at 7 p.m.
