SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's basketball team gave head coach Joshua Hersch his first career victory with a 78-36 thrashing of Martin Luther in the 2023-24 season opener at Hutton Arena on Wednesday evening.
The Pipers begin the season 1-0, while the Knights drop to 0-2.

It was a historic night for the Hamline defense, who held Martin Luther to a .205 (9-of-44) field goal percentage. It marked the lowest shooting percentage from an opposing team since December 30, 2014, when the Pipers held Crown College to a .200 (10-of-50) mark in an 84-35 win. The Pipers registered 14 steals in the contest.
The Hamline offense fired on all cylinders from beyond the arch with a .361 (13-of-36) figure, along with a .433 (26-of-60) mark from the field.Â
Sixteen different Pipers saw playing time, 13 of whom contributed points. Kate Trachsel and Camille Cummings each had 16 points apiece while Lydia Lecher led the way with nine rebounds and three steals to go with 11 points. Michaela Stamer rounded out the double figure Pipers with 10 points. Hamline got a three-point basket from seven players, led by Trachsel's 4-of-7 mark.Â
The Pipers will open MIAC play on Tuesday, November 21 against Saint Mary's (Minn.) at Hutton Arena. Opening tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
