A Big Third Period for the Pipers Resulting in a Season Sweep Over St. Olaf

SAINT PAUL, MINN - The Hamline University women's hockey team welcomed St. Olaf to Tria Rink for a Saturday afternoon conference-game. This was a battle from the start but once this Piper offense got going, they were hard to stop today scoring all four of their goals in the last 23 minutes of play. Hamline started the game with outstanding defensive plays and ended the game with relentless scoring to come away with the convincing 4-1 victory over St. Olaf.

Hamline improves to 5-2 on the season, 3-1 in conference play, while St. Olaf falls to 4-4, 0-4 in the MIAC.

Hamline goalie Airika Penney set the tone once the puck dropped in the first period recording 12 of her 18 saves in the afternoon. Penney shined with five saves against the Oles five-minute power play in the first. The Pipers played some complementary hockey today by starting out hot on the defensive side of things just waiting for the goals to start coming. After the first period each team was held scoreless then Solvei Berg-Messerole put the Oles on the board with a goal at 11:23 in the second to make the score 1-0. Sophomore forward Annika Lindgren scored with three minutes remaining in the second period which tied the game at one heading into the final intermission. The Pipers picked up right where Lindgren left off and did not look back, scoring three goals in the closing period making the final score 4-1.

Senior forward Emme Nelson broke the tie at 13:18 in the third period which made the score 2-1 in favor of the Pipers. At 8:25 Syndey Lemke added another goal for the home team to increase the lead to two. The Oles had to pull their goalie to attempt for some late-game heroics, but freshman defender Abby Chamernick had other thoughts in mind, scoring a empty-net goal to end the game making the final score 4-1.

The Pipers head to Concordia (Minn.) next Friday, December 1st at 7 p.m.
