WINONA, MINN.—The Hamline University men's hockey team concluded a three-game road stand to open the 2023-24 season with a Friday-night bout at Saint Mary's (Minn.). The Pipers had the slight edge in shots at 24-23, but were victim of a pair of second-period goals in a 2-0 loss.
Hamline falls to 1-2-0, 0-1-0 MIAC, while Saint Mary's first win of the season gives them a 1-2-0, 1-0-0 MIAC record.

Despite eight minutes of power play time and a 24-23 shots advantage, the Pipers couldn't find the back of the net as Cardinals goaltender Matt Sankner registered a 24-save shutout. The offense provided him with a pair of second-period goals courtesy of Bud Winter at 12:27, and Colin Tushie at 18:09 that secured a 2-0 victory. Blake Arneson, Luke Ciolli, and Noah Kiemel each picked up assists for the Cardinals.
Pipers goaltender Maximillian Haselbacher had 21 saves. Jackson Wille and Joe Martin each had a team-high three shots for the Pipers.
Hamline will look to salvage a weekend split with Saint Mary's tomorrow, Saturday, November 4 in their 2023-24 home opener at TRIA Rink. Game time is set for 5 p.m.
