Head Coach Jim Hayes Secures 100th Career Win in a Non-Conference Battle With UW-River Falls

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University men's basketball team gave head coach Jim Hayes his 100th career victory with an 82-75 decision over UW-River Falls at Hutton Arena on Saturday afternoon.

Hayes, who is currently in his 11th season, is the third head coach to achieve 100 wins at Hamline; joining Joe Hutton (591 wins, 1931-1965), and Tim Mieure (164 wins, 1980-1993).

The Pipers improve to 5-3, while the Falcons fall to 4-5. Hamline has now defeated UW-River Falls for the second-straight season.

Bradley Cimperman came through with a season-high 36 points on 11-of-14 shooting, which included a 5-of-8 figure from beyond the arch. The game's ninth and final lead change occurred with 14:06 remaining in the second half, when Cimperman's fifth 3-pointer of the contest put Hamline ahead 52-50. Cimperman's three-point basket kick started a 9-0 run that pushed the Pipers' advantage to 58-50 with 12:10 left in the second half.

Despite Hamline being in the driver's seat from that point forward, River Falls managed to cut their deficit to two points on two more occasions. They kept it within five points with 00:27 remaining off Zac Johnson's three-pointer that made the score 80-75, which provoked a UW-River Falls timeout. With the Falcons already in foul mode, Mick Wherley sank both his free throws with 00:26 on the clock to seal an 82-75 victory for Hamline.

Cimperman, who also nailed 9-of-10 free throws, added two assists, three rebounds, and one block to his stat line.

Austin Holt's third double double of the season consisted of 10 points and 13 rebounds. He also tied for a team-leading four assists with Daniel McCarrell. Wherley added 16 points, three assists, and a block for the Pipers.

Hamline achieved season highs in points (82), three-pointers made (11), three-point percentage (.379), rebounds (37), defensive rebounds (33), and assists (16).

UW-River Falls, who had a .433 (26-of-60) field goal percentage as well as a .370 (10-of-27) mark from three-point land, were led by Zac Johnson's team-leading 23 points and six rebounds.

The Pipers will return to action at the Daytona Beach Shootout on December 29-30. They'll square-off against Wilkes on Friday, December 29 at 6 p.m. (ET) in Daytona Beach, Florida.
