Pipers Fall to Auggies in Penalty-Laden Contest

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's hockey team hosted Augsburg in the back-end of a home-and-home series at Tria Rink on Saturday afternoon. The Pipers dropped a 3-2 decision in a game that resulted in a combined 18 penalties.

Hamline falls to 7-15-1, 6-9-1 MIAC, while Augsburg improves to 15-6-2, 12-3-1 MIAC.

Augsburg 3, Hamline 2

Six penalties were called in each period. It had no bearing in the opening frame, when Emily Schoeberl gave Augsburg a 1-0 lead at the 12:32 mark. The infractions played a role in the second period, as both goals occurred via special teams. Annika Lindgren did the honors off a feed from Ashley Grabau on the power play at 1:23 of the second period to knot the game at 1-1. Hamline's power play couldn't keep that momentum going, as Augsburg tagged them with a shorthanded goal courtesy of Jenna Gerold at 7:07 of the second frame en route to a 2-1 lead.

Sydney Lemke would rebound a shot from Cheyenne Abear, and bury a goal at 3:34 of the third period to tie things at 2-2. However, the Auggies would continue their stellar special teams outing as Payton Allen converted her team's second power-play tally of the game at 14:18 of the third period, which gave her team a 3-2 lead and victory.

Maddie Nickell put together another solid outing in net with 37 saves for Hamline, while Chloe Stockinger came through with 30 stops for Augsburg.

The Pipers will face Bethel at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota on Friday, February 17 at 7 p.m.
