SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's hockey team embarked on a must-win situation in their 2022-23 regular season finale against Bethel at Tria Rink on Saturday. The Pipers booked their ticket to the MIAC Tournament with a 4-1 victory over the Royals, and help from St. Benedict's 3-1 victory over St. Catherine later in the afternoon.
The No. 5 seed Pipers, who improve to 9-15-1, 8-9-1 MIAC, will travel to No. 4Â seed St. Olaf for a first-round game on Thursday, February 23 at 7 p.m. The Royals' season ends with an 8-16-0, 5-13-0 MIAC record.
Hamline 4, Bethel 1
Bethel took a quick 1-0 lead behind Emily Wiltse's goal 1:39 into the contest, before Hamline responded with four unanswered tallies courtesy of back-to-back scores each from Erika Broten (second period) and Nikki Olund (third period) that sealed a 4-1 victory. Broten's goals were her first of the season.
Cheyenne Abear finished the contest with a pair of assists for Hamline, who out shot Bethel 37-13.
Maddie Nickell made 12 saves in net for Hamline, while Ashley Hess stopped 33 shots for Bethel.
Seniors Lucy Hoelscher, Elizabeth Valley, Hannah Dorsey, Maddie Nickell, and Mackenzie Kaasa were honored prior to the game.
