Emme Nelson's Game Winner in OT Sends Pipers to MIAC Tournament Semifinal

NORTHFIELD, MINN.—The No. 5 seed Hamline University women's hockey team traveled to No. 4 seed St. Olaf for a MIAC Tournament First Round game on Friday night. Emme Nelson's game-winning goal at 5:14 of overtime propelled the Pipers to a 2-1 (OT) victory in front of 578 fans at the Northfield Ice Arena.

The Pipers, who improve to 10-15-1, will travel to top-seed Gustavus Adolphus for the MIAC Tournament Semifinal on Sunday, February 26 at 4 p.m. The Oles' season ends with a 14-10-2 record.

Hamline 2, St. Olaf 1 (OT)

Both teams displayed their talents with full strength, as just one penalty was called in the game. St. Olaf capitalized on their fourth shot on goal of the game at 4:43 of the first period courtesy of Makenna Beaver, which made things 1-0.

That proved to be the Oles' final goal of the game, as Hamline scored a pair of unanswered tallies. The first one came from Nikki Olund at 16:05 of second period, which knotted the game at 1-1.

A scoreless third period resulted in a combined 11 shots on goal. The overtime session proved to be more entertaining as each team registered three shots on goal, which culminated in Emme Nelson's wrist shot that snuck over Oles goaltender Hannah Fritz' right shoulder to the back of the net en route to a 2-1 (OT) victory.

Broten assisted on both Hamline goals.

Maddie Nickell made 30 saves in net for the Pipers, while Fritz stopped 24 shots for St. Olaf.
