TOPEKA, KAN.—The Hamline University baseball team opened their 2023 season with a neutral-site bout against Buena Vista (DH) in Topeka, Kansas on Saturday, where they dropped a pair of games by scores of 23-5 (7 Innings) and 14-11.
The Pipers fall to 0-2, while the Beavers improve to 2-0.
Game One: Buena Vista 23, Hamline 5 (7 Innings)
Buena Vista pounded 14 hits in the contest, but also produced base runners from the 12 walks they drew. Jordan Mathewson highlighted the Beavers with a 4-for-5 outing that included a triple, six RBI and a pair of runs scored. His brother Caden Mathewson, Drew Taylor, Joel Garcia, and Evan Taylor notched home runs for the Beavers.
Ian Sandbo led Hamline at the plate with a 3-for-3 outing that consisted of two doubles, while Tyler Johnson went 2-for-3 with a home run.
Morgan Smith was credited the pitching win as he allowed eight hits, five runs (three earned), and registered four strikeouts over five innings of work. Zach Branson got the pitching start for Hamline.
Game Two: Buena Vista 14, Hamline 11
The Beavers led from start-to-finish, and got a hit from all but one member of their starting lineup highlighted by home runs from Caden Mathewson and Tegan Bock.
However, the Pipers were able to get a hit from eight of their starters, led by Mac Enlow's 4-for-5 day that included a pair of doubles, while Matt Rusch went 2-for-5 with a double. Tyler Johnson and Finn Melchior each hit a home run for the Pipers. Owen Christenson contributed a triple.
Conor Mestemacher, Carter Hoff, and Jonah Smallfield all saw pitching action for Hamline. Dalton Glenn got the pitching win for Buena Vista as he allowed nine hits and seven runs (six earned) over five innings of work.
The Pipers will face Buena Vista in a single game tomorrow, Sunday, February 19 at 12 p.m. in Topeka, Kansas.
