Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Pipers Begin Spring With a Pair of Wins

GREEN BAY, WIS.—The Hamline University men's tennis team began the spring portion of their 2022-23 season with a pair of wins in the Fox Valley on Friday. They picked up a 7-2 decision over St. Norbert in the first match, and converted an 8-1 decision over Lawrence in the nightcap.

The Pipers improve to 4-2 on the season. St. Norbert falls to 4-5, while Lawrence drops to 1-7.

"The men displayed a great and consistent effort today," said Pipers head tennis coach Spencer Jones. "Sweeping the doubles to start a match on our quality opponent's home court is a sign of great things to come."

Zach Irrthum picked up his first collegiate wins. He engineered a Hamline doubles sweep in the No. 3 position, where he registered an 8-3 win with partner Surprise Taylor.

Just two-of-six singles matches didn't go to a third set. This included Irrthum's 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 6, and Taylor's 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5.

Hamline 8, Lawrence 1

Irrthum and Taylor highlighted a Hamline doubles sweep once again with a flawless 8-0 performance at the No. 3 position.

Unlike the first match, all singles matches took just two sets. Hamline's most convincing singles victory occurred at No. 4, where Sean Le picked up a 6-1, 6-2 decision. This engineered a Pipers squad that picked up wins at No. 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 singles.

Hamline will open MIAC play at Gustavus Adolphus on Saturday, March 4.
