TUCSON, ARIZ.—The Hamline University baseball team squared-off against Carthage for the second time this week in Tucson, Arizona on Friday. The Pipers flipped the score from their 5-4 (12 innings) loss to the Firebirds earlier in the week with a 5-4 victory this time around.
Hamline improves to 4-9, while Carthage falls to 5-7.
Hamline 5, Carthage 4
Hamline registered a trio of second-inning runs, and would never trail from that point forward. The Firebirds cut their deficit to one run on three occasions, including 4-3 in the sixth inning and 5-4 in the eight inning. Relief pitcher Dalton Maxwell was there to hold off Carthage in both those instances and secure a 5-4 victory for Hamline.
The Pipers' offense registered seven hits in the contest. Finn Melchior went 1-for-1 with three walks while Gavin Renwick turned in a 1-for-3 outing that included two RBI.
Zach Branson picked up the pitching win for Hamline. He went 5 1/3 innings and allowed seven hits, three runs, and notched five strikeouts. Maxwell surrendered just three hits and one run in the 3 2/3 inning save.
The Pipers will close spring break tomorrow, Saturday, March 18 against Redlands in Tucson, Arizona at 9 a.m. (MT).
