Pipers Fall to Huskies and Shorewomen

KISSIMMEE, FLA.—The Hamline University softball team dropped a pair of games in Kissimmee, Florida on Thursday morning by scores of 6-1 to Southern Maine, and 7-3 to Washington (Md.).

The Pipers fall to 6-5-1 with the losses.

Southern Maine 6, Hamline 1

Down 5-0 through four innings of play, the Pipers mustered their lone run of the contest in the fifth inning. Lydia Lecher reached on an infield error and moved to second base on Maddie Johnson's single. This set up Jenna Rubbelke's single up the middle that sent home Lecher, which narrowed Hamline's deficit to 5-1. The Huskies responded with one run in the bottom half of the fifth to push their edge to 6-1.

Sophie Stork pitched the opening 4 1/3 innings for Hamline and gave up seven hits and six runs (four earned). Dana Rosbacka and Montana Miller combined to pitch the final frame for the Pipers, who managed just three hits off Southern Maine starting pitcher Lauren Merrill. Rubbelke, Raelyn Costley, and Maddie Johnson accounted for those hits.

Washington (Md.) 7, Hamline 3

The Pipers dug themselves out of a 2-0 second-inning deficit and grabbed a lead. They strung a pair of third-inning runs where Gabby Tuhy walked, reached second on Maddie Johnson's single, touched third on a passed ball, and came home on Rubbelke's sacrifice fly to narrow Hamline's deficit to 2-1. Johnson would come home when Josephine Cariveau reached on an error, which tied the Shorewomen 2-2.

Savannah Johnson gave the Pipers a 3-2 lead in the fourth inning as she led off with a double, and scored off Lecher's single.

That lead was short-lived as Jules Weglarz' three-run home run in the fifth inning was the start to five unanswered runs en route to a 7-2 win for the Shorewomen.

Washington (Md.) outhit Hamline 12-5, as Weglarz' home run highlighted her 4-for-4 outing. Savannah Johnson led the Pipers with a 2-for-2 day and a walk.

Dana Rosbacka, Montana Miller, and Sophie Stork all saw pitching time for Hamline. Both pitching staffs combined to strikeout just five batters.

Hamline will end spring break tomorrow, Saturday, March 18 against Wesleyan at 9 a.m. (ET), and UW-Oshkosh at 11 a.m. (ET) in Clermont, Florida.
