Royals Take Two From Pipers

ARDEN HILLS, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team made the short trip to defending MIAC Regular Season and Tournament Champion Bethel (DH) for a Saturday-afternoon bout in rain-like conditions, where they dropped 19-5 and 10-3 decisions.

The Pipers fall to 8-18, 4-4 MIAC, while the Royals improve to 14-4, 6-0 MIAC.

Tyler Johnson was the only multi-hit Piper with a 4-for-4 outing that included a double and three RBI. Nick Zezulka went 1-for-2 with a home run for Hamline, who accumulated 10 hits as a team.

Parker Leipzig, Dalton Maxwell, Brady Johnson, and Luke Schmaedeke all saw pitching time for Hamline. They combined to surrender 16 hits and eight walks. Ty Koehn put together a solid pitching outing for Bethel as he allowed five hits, two runs, and notched six strikeouts over four innings of work before Aidan Nelson and Zachary Haala closed the game.

The Royals scored all their runs in the second, third, and fourth innings before the Pipers tacked on three in the seventh. Ian Sandbo's sacrifice fly scored Caden Erickson, who was hit by a pitch, to narrow the margin to 10-1. Nick Zezulka and Avery Liebren singled, and each scored on Max Gerstner's double to make things 10-3.

Zezulka and Gerstner each went 2-for-3 at the plate for a Hamline team who had eight hits.

Conor Mestemacher, Finn Melchior, and Ethan Smith combined to give up 12 hits, 10 runs, and notch four strikeouts on the rubber for the Pipers. Ty Koehn, Keenan Hodgkin, and Noah Wenberg each hit home runs for the Royals.

The Pipers will host Macalester (DH) at CHS Field on Monday, April 17 at 2:30 p.m.
