MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team split at Augsburg on Sunday afternoon as they dropped game one 2-1, and registered an 8-1 win in game two behind Zach Branson's 12 strikeouts on the pitching rubber.
The split sends the Pipers to 10-20, 6-6 MIAC, while the Auggies move to 6-15, 2-6 MIAC.
Augsburg 2, Hamline 1
Hamline's lone run occurred in the third inning when Avery Liebren led off with an infield single, moved to second base on Max Gerstner's groundout, and scored off Mac Enlow's single to make the score 1-0. Augsburg tallied a pair of fifth-inning runs to grab a 2-1 lead, where they'd hold on for a victory.
Gerstner, Liebren, Enlow, Caden Erickson, and Tyler Johnson each had a hit for Hamline.
Parker Leipzig allowed five hits, two runs, and notched two strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings before Jonah Smallfield threw the final 1 1/3 frames for the Pipers. Each team had five hits.
Hamline 8, Augsburg 1
Zach Branson registered 12 strikeouts and allowed just six hits over six innings of pitching work for Hamline. Dalton Maxwell notched two strikeouts and allowed one hit in the final three frames
Augsburg set the tone with a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but it was Hamline who registered eight unanswered runs to secure the 8-1 victory. This included a five-run eighth inning.
Matt Rusch went 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored for the Pipers, who finished with 11 hits as a team. Gavin Renwick and Owen Christenson each had a pair of hits, and scored a run. Christenson also contributed a double, and a pair of sacrifice flies en route to two RBI.
The Pipers will host Concordia (Minn.) at CHS Field on Wednesday, April 26 at 4 p.m.
