Pipers Drop a Pair at Home to Cobbers

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team hosted Concordia (Minn.) (DH) for a Wednesday-evening bout at CHS Field, where they dropped a pair of games by scores of 11-2 and 20-16.

The Pipers fall to 10-22, 6-8 MIAC, while the Cobbers improve to 15-13, 9-3 MIAC.

Concordia 11, Hamline 2

Concordia led from start-to-finish in a game that saw them outhit Hamline 12-5. Finn Melchior contributed a double for the Pipers while Max Gerstner, Mac Enlow, Caden Erickson, and Gavin Renwick also had hits.

Both teams combined for just four strikeouts in the contest.

Dalton Maxwell allowed eight hits, seven runs, and two walks over 4 1/3 innings on the mound for Hamline. Xavier Bembnister and Ethan Smith combined to give up four hits and four runs in relief.

Concordia 20, Hamline 16

A whopping four lead changes occurred in the contest as both teams combined for 42 hits and 36 runs scored.

A five-run eighth inning gave Hamline their final lead of the game as RBI-singles from Ian Sandbo and Gavin Renwick, a two-run double from Owen Christenson, and an RBI sacrifice bunt from Avery Liebren put them in the driver's seat at 15-12 heading into the final frame.

It ignited a Cobber squad that strung together eight runs and eight hits in the ninth inning, which provoked the game's final lead change and put them in front at 20-15, which gave them enough cushion in a 20-16 victory.

Max Gerstner went 4-for-5 at the plate for Hamline, while Gavin Renwick's 3-for-5 outing included a triple. four RBI, two runs scored, and one walk. Caden Erickson registered a 3-for-5 game, which consisted of three RBI, two runs, and a walk. Christenson's double highlighted a 2-for-5 performance that included five RBI and a run. Tyler Johnson and Mac Enlow also had multi-hit games for the Pipers.

Finn Melchior got the pitching start for Hamline before Jonah Smallfield, Parker Leipzig and Ethan Smith came in relief. Both pitching staffs combined for just five strikeouts.

Andy Gravdahl led Concordia at the plate with a 4-for-6 outing that included a home run and five RBI.

The Pipers will host Carleton (DH) for Senior Day at CHS Field on Saturday, April 29 at 1 p.m.
