SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team hosted Carleton (DH) for a Monday-afternoon bout at CHS Field, where they dropped a pair of games by scores of 3-2 and 12-5.
The Pipers fall to 10-24, 6-10 MIAC while the Knights improve to 7-20, 3-11 MIAC.
Carleton 3, Hamline 2
Carleton scored the game's first run in the second frame before Hamline responded with a pair of fourth-inning scores. Both runs occurred with the bases loaded as Gavin Renwick's walk drove in Enlow (infield single) before Avery Liebren's infield single sent home Ian Sandbo (bunt single), which gave the Pipers a 2-1 lead.
Hamline couldn't muster anymore offense as Carleton tacked on a sixth, and seventh inning run. Ryan Chang led off the sixth with a single and later scored off Will Schnepf's double to even the score at 2-2. The Knights turned a pair of Pipers errors into a seventh-inning run, which secured them a 3-2 victory.
Tyler Johnson, Mac Enlow, and Ian Sandbo each went 2-for-4 at the plate for Hamline. The trio accounted for 6-of-7 Pipers hits in the contest.
Zach Branson allowed nine hits, two runs, and notched four strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings of pitching work for Hamline before Jonah Smallfield threw the final 1 1/3 in a losing decision.
Carleton 12, Hamline 5
The score read 3-3 heading into the fifth inning, where both of the game's lead changes occurred. The first lead change was in Carleton's favor as Sam Chutkow led off the top of the fifth with a walk before he moved to third base off John Hurtubise's single. Ryan Chang would reach on a fielder's choice, which sent home Chutkow and gave the Knights a 4-3 lead.
Finn Melchior was responsible for the second lead change, as his two-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning gave Hamline a 5-4 lead. Max Gerstner, who led off with a walk, also scored on the home run.
The Knights responded with eight unanswered runs throughout the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings to secure a 12-5 win.
Melchior's two-run home run highlighted his 2-for-5 outing that included two runs scored. Gerstner drew three walks en route to a 1-for-2 game.
Dalton Maxwell allowed four hits and three runs over the opening four innings on the mound for Hamline before five different individuals were used in relief.
The Pipers will host Saint Mary's (Minn.) (DH) for Senior Day tomorrow, Tuesday, May 2 at 4 p.m.
