SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team hosted Saint Mary's (DH) at CHS Field for their 2023 home finale on Tuesday, where they dropped 14-2 and 10-0 (7 innings) decisions.
The Pipers fall to 10-26, 6-12 MIAC, while the Cardinals improve to 13-18, 8-10 MIAC.
Owen Christenson, Matt Rusch, Gavin Renwick, Jonah Smallfield, Ian Sandbo, Avery Liebren, and Zach Branson were honored for Senior Day.
Saint Mary's (Minn.) 14, Hamline 2
By and large, the game was closer than the score indicated as both teams battled their way to a 0-0 decision through the third inning. The Cardinals never surrendered the lead in a game that saw them notch 12 of their 17 hits over the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. They saved the best for last, as their nine-run seventh inning locked them a 14-2 victory.
Finn Melchior led Hamline at the plate with a 2-for-4 outing that included a double and an RBI. Ian Sandbo and Matt Rusch each went 2-for-3 to round out the multi-hit Pipers.
Parker Leipzig allowed 10 hits, five runs, and notched four strikeouts over five innings pitched before four individuals saw time in relief.
Saint Mary's (Minn.) 10, Hamline 0 (7 Innings)
The Pipers managed just four hits off Cardinals pitcher TJ Bergland, who also allowed just one walk and tallied one strikeout in the complete-game victory. Owen Christenson accounted for half those hits, as he paced the Hamline offense with a 2-for-3 outing.
Finn Melchior (4 innings) and Ethan Smith (3 innings) combined to allow 15 hits and 10 runs (eight earned) on the mound for Hamline.
The Pipers will conclude their 2023 season at St. Scholastica (DH) on Saturday, May 6 at 1 p.m.
