SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's hockey team squared off against St. Catherine in a MIAC road game at Drake Arena, geographically closer to Hamline than TRIA Rink, on Friday night. Both teams combined for just 34 shots on goal in the game, but it was the Pipers who capitalized on a 4-1 victory over the Wildcats.
Hamline improves to 11-3-0, 6-1-0 MIAC, while St. Catherine falls to 5-7-1, 1-5-1 MIAC.
Hamline 4, St. Catherine 1
Haley Eder-Zdechlik converted the Pipers' second shot on goal of the game at 7:28 of the opening period, which occurred shorthanded. The first shot of the second period resulted in a 2-0 Hamline lead courtesy of Nikki Olund at 1:18. Olund put the finishing touches on her two-point outing when she assisted on Sydney Lemke's goal that widened the margin to 3-0 at 8:19 of the third period.
St. Catherine pulled their goalie at 13:57 of the third period. The extra attacker paid dividends at 14:42 of the third frame, when Abby Pirkl narrowed Hamline's lead to 3-1. The Pipers finally capitalized on the empty net at 17:47, when Emme Nelson made the score 4-1.
Hamline held an 18-16 advantage in shots on goal. Olund finished with one goal and one assist. Erika Broten and Abigail Chamernick each picked up an assist in the contest.
Kendra Nordick stopped 15 shots in net for the Pipers, while Abby Severson made 14 saves between the pipes for the Wildcats.
Hamline will host St. Catherine at TRIA Rink tomorrow, Saturday, January 13 at 2 p.m.
