DULUTH, MINN.—The Hamline University men's hockey team made the 2-hour trip up I-35 on Saturday to face No. 11 St. Scholastica. The Pipers held superstar brothers Arkhip and Filmon Ledenkov to just one point each. However, that one point occurred on St. Scholastica's game-winning goal, scored by Arkhip, at 00:49 of overtime that sealed them a 4-3 OT victory.
Hamline falls to 6-11-2, 2-7-1 MIAC, while St. Scholastica improves to 14-4-1, 7-2-1 MIAC.
St. Scholastica 4, Hamline 3 OT
The Pipers held a dominating 40-22 advantage in shots on goal, but it never resulted in a lead. St. Scholastica jumped to a 2-0 lead behind goals from Bryce Johnson at 13:52 of the first period and Nathan Adrian at 6:38 of the second frame.
Hamline managed to cut their deficit to one goal on a pair of occasions within 1:19 of clock time. It started with Bailey Sommers' score at 17:15 of the second period that narrowed the Saints' lead to 2-1, before Tristan Shewchuk gave his team another two-goal cushion at 3-1 at 17:49.Â
St. Scholastica didn't score again in regulation, but Hamline scored two goals courtesy of Will Matzke at 18:34 of the second period, and Carson Simon at 4:57 of the third that knotted the game at 3-3.
The Saints buried their first shot of overtime at 00:49 thanks to Arkhip Ledenhov from Filimon Ledenkov and Kieran Chung.
Simon and Matzke each had a goal and an assist, while Brandon McNamara tallied two assists.
Trevor Wong had 18 saves for Hamline, while Jack Bostedt tallied 37 stops for the Saints.
Hamline will travel to Gustavus Adolphus on Friday, February 2 for a 7 p.m. game.
