SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The Hamline University men's basketball team defeated UW-Stout 90-70 in Menomonie, Wisconsin on Wednesday night. This marked Hamline's first 2-0 start to a season since 2017-18. It was also the first match between these two teams since the 1984-85 season, when the Blue Devils defeated the Pipers 48-44.
Hamline improves to 2-0, while the Blue Devils stay winless at 0-3 overall.
Hamline 90, UW-Stout 70
The Pipers led the Blue Devils 42-33 following the opening 20:00, capitalizing on strong shooting and rebounding. Hamline made 15-of-28 baskets and went 11-of-14 from the free-throw line, while the Blue Devils struggled with 13-of-37 field goal shooting and only four free-throw attempts. The Pipers' dominance in the paint was evident, scoring 24 points to the Blue Devils' 18, and they also out-rebounded them 21 to 16, despite Stout's 18 bench points compared to Hamline's six.
In the second half, the Pipers outscored the Blue Devils 48-37, leading to a dominant performance. Hamline excelled in points in the paint with 30 compared to Stout's 14 and also capitalized on turnovers, scoring 10 points off turnovers while the Blue Devils managed seven. Hamline's bench contributed significantly with eight points, although it was the Blue Devils that had more bench production overall with 20 points. Defensively, Hamline recorded eight steals and three blocks, while the Blue Devils had one steal and four blocks.
Bradley Cimperman led Hamline with 25 points, achieving nine baskets and six free throws, which were the team's top stats in those categories.
Daniel McCarrell contributed significantly with 14 points, five assists, and three steals, highlighting his all-around performance.
Austin Holt added 17 points with an impressive seven baskets and secured seven rebounds.
Raoul Vaidya stood out defensively with two steals and five defensive rebounds, while
Brendan Ebel contributed 13 points, six rebounds, and three steals, showcasing his balanced play on both ends of the floor.
The Blue Devils' standout players included AJ Uttech, who contributed significantly with 13 points and two steals. Justin Nelson led the team with 16 points and also made a notable defensive impact with two blocks and two steals. Jacob Walczak added eight points and grabbed four rebounds, demonstrating his ability to contribute both offensively and defensively. Colin Hudson scored eight points, including two 3-pointers, while also securing three rebounds. Each of these players played a key role in their team's performance, excelling in various aspects of the game.
The Pipers will host Crown at Hutton Arena on Wednesday, November 20 at 7:30 p.m.
