Pipers Dismantle Yellowjackets on the Road

SUPERIOR, WIS.--The Hamline University women's basketball team defeated UW-Superior 72-49 on the road on Wednesday night.

The Pipers improve to 3-1, while the Yellowjackets fall to 2-2 on the season.

In the first quarter, the Pipers led 14-9 against the Yellowjackets, and capitalized on six turnovers. Hamline shot 4-of-18 from the field, including 1-of-4 from beyond the arc, and efficiently converted 5-of-8 free throws. Despite their shooting struggles, they dominated the boards with 13 rebounds, including seven offensive. Superior managed 3-of-12 shooting, with their bench contributing two points, but was hampered by turnovers and fouls, committing five personal fouls in the quarter.

The second frame saw Hamline outscore the Yellowjackets 21-11, capitalizing on turnovers and defensive rebounds. They forced eight turnovers and recorded four steals, leading to eight points off turnovers. The visitors shot 53.8% from the field, including 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, and converted 5-of-6 free throws. The Yellowjackets struggled with ball control, committing eight turnovers, while managing only five baskets in the quarter.

The Pipers extended their lead over the Yellowjackets with a 19-12 scoring advantage in the third frame. Hamline made 8-of-15 field goals, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, while Superior converted 5-of-10 shots, with the same 3-point shooting accuracy. The Pipers capitalized on turnovers, scoring seven points off the Yellowjackets' seven turnovers, and dominated in the paint with 12 points compared to the Superior's four.

In the fourth quarter, Hamline edged the Yellowjackets with an 18-17 score. The Pipers connected on 8-of-15 field goals, including 2-of-4 from beyond the arc, while the Yellowjackets made 5-of-12 shots with 3-of-7 from three-point range. Hamline capitalized on bench scoring with 11 points, compared to the Yellowjackets' four.

Camille Cummings paced Hamline with 22 points while converting 7-of-11 field goals and 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. She also added two steals to her stat line. Kate Trachsel made significant contributions with 17 points, six field goals, and three steals. Lauren Cooper was notable on defense with two steals, while also scoring eight points. Evelyn Wiltrout contributed on the boards, grabbing four rebounds along with nine points and a block.

Katie Dobson led the Yellowjackets with a strong all-around performance, scoring 14 points on 5-for-10 shooting, including two three-pointers. Dobson also contributed defensively with three steals and added one block. Elise Besonen was the top scorer for the team with 18 points, making 6-of-13 shots from the field and four of seven from beyond the arc. Chloe Peterson added six points and matched Dobson's defensive effort with three steals, while MyKenzie Leccia was a key presence on the boards, securing six defensive rebounds.

Hamline will travel to UW-Stout on Tuesday, November 26 for a 7 p.m. game.
