Pipers Couldn't Maintain Lead in Loss to Royals

SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The Hamline University men's hockey team let leads of 1-0 and 2-1 go by the wayside in a 5-2 loss to Bethel at TRIA Rink on Friday night.

The Pipers fall to 0-5-0, 0-3-0 MIAC, while Bethel improves to 3-3-1, 1-0-0 MIAC.

Hamline opened the scoring late in the first period with a goal from Carson Simon at 17:23, assisted by Will Matzke and Brandon McNamara. Bethel responded early in the second period with Liam Hennessy's goal at 3:31, assisted by Jake Herter, tying the game 1-1. The home team briefly regained the advantage at 9:11 in the second period with a goal by Nikolai Dulak, which made the score 2-1. Bethel quickly answered with two goals, one by Shane Lavelle at 13:08 and another by Jeremiah Konkel just 47 seconds later at 13:55, taking a 3-2 lead. Bethel extended their cushion in the third period with a tally from Joe Westlund at 17:15, assisted by Jake Herter, before they capped the contest with an empty-net goal by Braeden Bartoo at 19:56, securing a 5-2 victory. Bethel's Jake Herter was involved in three assists, contributing significantly to their offensive success.

The Pipers, who went 0-for-3 on the power play, came up empty on a five-minute major called on Bethel's Spencer Kring at 6:17 of the third period. The Royals were also called for too many men shortly after at 8:40, which gave Hamline 5-on-3 time for two minutes.

Nikolai Dulak is notable for scoring one goal and contributing six shots, while Carson Simon has also made an impact with one goal. Harvey Dove demonstrated strong faceoff capabilities with a 75% win rate. Jake Turek was a key player in goal, recording 27 saves in his starting appearance, despite allowing four goals for the Pipers. Bethel outshot Hamline 32-30 in the contest.
Jake Herter paced Bethel with three assists and a team-high plus-minus of +3. Jeremiah Konkel was notable for scoring one goal and achieving a perfect winning percentage of 71% in faceoffs, along with scoring the game-winning goal. Braeden Bartoo also stood out with one goal and a high faceoff win percentage of 76%, demonstrating his effectiveness in both scoring and faceoff situations. Additionally, Shane Lavelle contributed with one goal and a plus-minus of +2, while Austin Ryman made a significant impact as a goalie, recording 28 saves in his start, despite allowing two goals.

The Pipers will look to even the weekend series at the National Sports Center in Blaine, Minnesota tomorrow, Saturday, November 23 at 5 p.m.
