Cardinals Clip Pipers 2-1 in 2024 Season Finale

SAINT PAUL, MINN.-- On Saturday, The Hamline University men's soccer team fell to Saint Mary's (Minn.) by a score of 2-1 at Pat Paterson Field. The match marked the 2024 season finale and the final game for fifth-year player Cole Brennan, along with seniors Ethan Schauer, Jonathan Bayer, Jessie Juarez, Liam Linares, and Jude Le.

The Pipers finish the 2024 season with a 14-6-0, 4-6 MIAC record, while the Cardinals conclude their campaign 8-9-1, 2-7-1 MIAC.

Saint Mary's 2, Hamline 1

Hamline and Saint Mary's finished the first half with Saint Mary's leading 1-0, thanks to a goal by Diego Giles in the 32nd minute. The Pipers had multiple opportunities with four corner kicks and three shots but failed to convert, while Saint Mary's faced discipline issues with two yellow cards and five fouls. Both teams committed an offside violation each, and the Pipers' Ricky Kwabena Yawson was involved in three fouls.

In the second half, Hamline and Saint Mary's each scored one goal, with Hamline's Cole Brennan finding the net in the 56th minute, assisted by Ryder Tomlinson Sterud. Shortly after, Saint Mary's responded with a goal from Mason Mueller in the 56th minute. Despite the Cardinals receiving a red card for Zach Newby in the 57th minute, the Pipers were unable to capitalize on their advantage. Hamline had numerous opportunities with 12 corner kicks during the half but could not convert them into additional goals. The match ended with Saint Mary's leading 2-1.

The Pipers out shot the Cardinals 6-3.

Ryder Tomlinson Sterud stood out for Hamline, having contributed one assist with three shots taken, two of which were on goal. Cole Brennan also made a significant impact, scoring the only goal for the Pipers, with his single shot on target. In goal, Bodean Gaustad played a full 90 minutes, faced three shots, and conceded two goals in his sole appearance.

Daniel Sessler made four saves in net for Saint Mary's.
