Pipers Rebound With Shutout Over Saints

SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The Hamline University women's hockey team secured a 2-0 victory over St. Scholastica at TRIA Rink on Friday night.

Hamline improves to 6-2, 4-1 MIAC, while the Saints fall to 1-8, 0-5 MIAC.

The Pipers established control early by winning multiple faceoffs, including the first one of the contest. The teams traded missed opportunities, with Hamline's Emme Nelson hitting the pipe at 4:26, and St. Scholastica's Gabby Gamst receiving a penalty for interference at 14:21, leading to a power play. The Pipers capitalized on the power play courtesy of Erika Broten at 15:27, assisted by Haley Eder-Zdechlik.

The second frame was marked by a series of defensive plays and missed opportunities, resulting in a scoreless segment. Hamline initiated the period with several aggressive attempts, including a missed shot by Cailey McLaughlin at :14 in, and a wide shot by Erika Broten 11 seconds later. St. Scholastica's defense was effective, with Sophie Parendo blocking shots and Makenzie Cole making multiple saves, including a crucial one at 19:43 against Abigail Chamernick. A penalty on Calie Peterson at 6:01 gave the Saints a power play, but the Pipers' defense held firm.

Both teams received penalties for roughing :23 into the third period, but neither squad capitalized on the subsequent power plays. Hamline's Ashlyn Abrahamson scored the only goal of the frame at 15:46, assisted by Nikki Olund, increasing their advantage to 2-0.

Ashlyn Abrahamson stood out for the Pipers with a goal while Erika Broten also made a significant impact, scoring one goal which was both a game-winner and a power-play tally. In the faceoff circle, Nikki Olund was effective, winning 65% of her attempts. On the defensive end, Kendra Nordick was a strong presence in goal, recording 20 saves.

Makenzie Cole also had a notable performance in goal for St. Scholastica, recording 38 saves. Sophie Parendo contributed defensively, leading the team with four blocked shots, while Gabby Gamst added to the defensive efforts with two blocks.

Hamline will look to sweep St. Scholastica in Duluth tomorrow, Saturday, December 7 at 6 p.m.
