SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University men's hockey team concluded their 2023-24 season with a Saturday-evening bout against Bethel at TRIA Rink. The Pipers had the upper hand in shots on goal 41-31, but it was the Royals who broke a 4-4 tie with a pair of late-game goals to secure a 6-4 victory.
The weekend sweep gives Bethel a 17-5-3, 11-3-2 MIAC record, while Hamline finishes their season with a 7-16-2, 3-12-1 MIAC mark.
Bethel 6, Hamline 4
Despite never leading in the game, Hamline held a 41-31 shots on goal advantage. This included a slight 11-10 edge over the opening 20:30 of the game, but it was Bethel who jumped to a 4-1 lead over that time.Â
The Pipers' shots eventually found the back of the net as goals from Kyle Mortenson at 3:27 of the second period, Brandon McNamara on the power play at 15:29 of the second, and Bailey Sommers on the power play at 4:29 of the third frame knotted things at 4-4.Â
Hamline went on to attain a 16-11 shots on goal advantage from that point forward, but came up empty as unanswered tallies from Tyler Kostelecky at 11:59 of the third, and Caydon Meyer (empty net) at 19:43 sealed a 6-4 win for Bethel.
A whopping 17 penalties were called in the contest.
Maximillian Haselbacher stopped 25 shots in net for the Pipers, while Marco Duronio made 37 saves for the Royals.
