TUCSON, AZ -- The Hamline Pipers put up a fight offensively but ultimately fell short against the Wesleyan Cardinals by a final score of 11-6.
The Pipers wasted no time getting on the board in the top of the 1st inning.
Tyler Johnson's sacrifice fly plated
Max Gerstner, followed by an RBI double by
Mac Enlow to give Hamline a quick 2-0 lead. However, Wesleyan responded in the bottom of the 2nd inning, tying the game with two runs. A sacrifice fly and a single brought the score to 2-2. Both teams continued to trade runs throughout the middle innings. Hamline regained the lead in the 3rd on RBIs by Johnson and Enlow, but Wesleyan answered back with a solo homer and a sacrifice fly to tie it again at 4-4.
The turning point came in the bottom of the 5th inning when Wesleyan capitalized on Hamline errors. They scored three unearned runs, taking a 7-4 lead that they wouldn't relinquish. The Pipers added one more run in the top of the 6th on a single by
Jack Rheineck, but Wesleyan tacked on four more runs in the later innings to secure the 11-6 victory.
Despite the loss, the Pipers' offense showed flashes of brilliance. Enlow led the way with a strong 3-for-5 performance with two RBIs. Johnson also chipped in with two RBIs, while Rheineck and Gerstner contributed RBIs as well.Â
The Pipers continue their run in Arizona on March 15, playing Edgewood at 9:30 a.m. (PT).
