Men's and Women's Tennis Faced Northwestern and Martin Luther

ROSEVILLE, MINN.—The Hamline University men's tennis team dropped a 5-4 decision to Northwestern, and defeated Martin Luther 9-0 in Roseville on Wednesday. The women also fell to Northwestern 5-4, and came back with a 7-2 win over Martin Luther.

NORTHWESTERN MATCHES

MEN: Northwestern 5, Hamline 4, WOMEN: Northwestern 5, Hamline 4

"Two tough close losses to our gracious host Northwestern this afternoon," said Pipers head tennis coach Spencer Jones. "Women's doubles played very well against Northwestern to take a 2-1 lead, but they out-fought in a couple of close singles matches that decided the score. We split the singles on the men's side, but came up short in the doubles. Liam Smith had a nice win at six."

MEN
The Pipers' lone doubles victory occurred at No. 3, where Keegan Terrone/Surprise Taylor prevailed 8-6. 

The bottom of Hamline's singles lineup was productive. Keegan Terrone took care of business 7-6, 7-5 at No. 5, while Liam Smith dominated 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6. Elijah Krause won a nail biting 5-7, 6-2, 1-0 decision in the No. 3 position.

WOMEN
Doubles gave Hamline a 2-1 lead courtesy of Lynn Nguyen/Elanna Kohner 8-4 at No. 2, and Natalie Randall/Sydney Hubbard 8-4 at No. 3

It was another day at the office for Elanna Kohner, who continued to carry the team on her shoulders with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6 singles. Vanessa Pham was victorious at No. 5 by a 6-2, 6-3 score.

MARTIN LUTHER MATCHES

MEN: Hamline 9, Martin Luther 0, WOMEN: Hamline 7, Northwestern 2

"We bounced back with two convincing wins against Martin Luther," said Jones. "Connor Donley won his first collegiate match as did Jessica Widmer.  First year Anya Sugden also had a nice victory at number six singles."

MEN
Isaac Hultberg/Tyler Rousslang teamed up for a 8-2 win at No. 1. doubles. Elijah Krause/Keegan Terrone dominated 8-1 at No. 2, while Connor Donley/Tate Johanning won 8-3 at No. 2

Hultberg kept the momentum going with an 8-0 victory at No. 1 singles, while Rousslang took care of business 8-1 at No. 2. Taylor and Terrone recorded 8-0 shutouts at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively. Smith won 8-2 at No. 5, and Donley secured an 8-1 decision at No. 6.

WOMEN
The Pipers exited doubles with a 2-1 lead behind wins from Nguyen/Kohner 8-4 at No. 1, and Elizabeth Dimian/Jessica Widmer 8-1 at No. 3.

Chloe Reyes and Ashley Pitzen each won 8-1 at No. 1 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Kohner recorded an 8-0 shutout at No. 5. Pham notched an 8-2 decision at No. 4, and Anya Sugden took care of business 8-3 at No. 6.

The women will host Gustavus Adolphus at Washington Tech School on Sunday, April 14 at 11 a.m. The men will host the Gusties at Washington Tech on Saturday, April 13 at 11 a.m.
