Pipers Win Game Two of a Split With Knights

SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University baseball team split a pair of games with Carleton (DH) at CHS Field on Monday afternoon, losing game one 4-1 and winning game two 16-6 (8 Innings).

The Pipers move to 14-19, 6-8 MIAC with the split, while the Knights go to 10-19, 7-9 MIAC.

Hamline 4, Carleton 1 (Game One)

Pipers starting pitcher Hans Christensen V turned in an effective performance as he gave up a run each in the second and fourth innings, six total hits, no walks, and notched five strikeouts over five innings. However, the offense mustered just one run for Christensen V in the fourth inning, when Tyler Johnson led off with a hit by pitch before he scored from first base off Finn Melchior's double to narrow the score to 2-1.

Reigning MIAC Pitcher of the Week Josh Cary allowed two runs in the sixth frame, four total hits, no walks, and tallied a strikeout over the final two innings, where Carleton secured a 4-1 win.

Carleton out hit Hamline 10-5. Melchior and Mac Enlow each went 1-for-3 with a double.

Hamline 16, Carleton 6 (Game Two)

Carleton jumped to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Hamline responded with five in the bottom half of the first and maintained that lead for good in a 16-6 victory.

Both teams combined for 11 doubles in the game, six belonged to Hamline.

Each team finished with 12 hits. Tyler Johnson accounted for 1/3 of the Pipers' hits with a 4-for-5 outing that consisted of a double, five RBI, three runs scored, and a walk. Max Gerstner accounted for 1/4 of Hamline's offense, as he went 3-for-4 with a double, two walks, an RBI, and a run.

Rounding out the multi-hit Pipers were Nick Zezulka and Stevie Schmitt. Zezulka's 2-for-4 outing included two doubles, three RBI, one walk, and two runs. Schmitt, who also had a double, was 2-for-3 with two walks, two runs, and two RBI. Leading the run scoring was Kyle Vanek, who circled the bases three times, drew two walks, and also had an RBI-double. 

Conor Mestemacher surrendered three runs and seven hits over the first three innings on the pitching rubber. Dalton Maxwell, who pitched the final five frames, allowed five hits and three runs in the winning decision. Mestemacher and Maxwell combined for five strikeouts. 

Ananth Iyer led Carleton at the plate with a 3-for-4 outing that included three doubles.

The Pipers will travel to Augsburg (DH) on Saturday, April 27 for a 1 p.m. start.
