WINONA, MINN.—The Hamline University softball team lost a pair of road games to Saint Mary's (Minn.) by scores of 3-2 (8 innings) and 4-2 in Winona, Minnesota on Friday.
The Pipers fall to 15-19, 5-15 MIAC, while the Cardinals improve to 29-9, 17-5 MIAC.
Saint Mary's (Minn.) 3, Hamline 2 (Game One)
The first inning resulted in a 1-0 Hamline lead as Jenna Rubbelke led off with a single and stole second base. Savannah Johnson knocked in Rubbelke with an RBI single up the middle.
The Cardinals' lone two runs of regulation occurred in the fourth inning, where runners scored from second and third base off a Pipers infield error, which put them in front 2-1.
The Pipers knotted the score at 2-2 in the seventh inning courtesy of Kiana Island's RBI single that scored Madisen Borek, who reached on a walk.
The Cardinals prevailed with the international rule of tie break in the eighth inning. It took them just two batters to knock in the free base runner on second base, as Zoe Fink came through with a game-winning pinch hit RBI single that scored Allison Cier.
Jenna Rubbelke went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored, while Abbey Herbert finished 2-for-3. Saint Mary's out hit Hamline 10-7.
Gracie Bond allowed two runs (none earned), seven hits, and four walks over five innings in the circle for Hamline. Montana Miller surrendered just three hits and one run over the final 2 1/3 frames. Cardinals starting pitcher Makayla Steffes gave up seven hits in a complete-game victory.
Saint Mary's 4, Hamline 2 (Game Two)
The Pipers led for the opening six innings.Â
Their damage began in the opening frame where Jenna Rubbelke singles, touched second base on a throwing error, stole third base, and gave Hamline a 1-0 lead off Savannah Johnson's groundout.
Rubbelke widened that margin to 2-0 in the third frame, where she singled, moved to second on Gabby Tuhy's single, and scored off Savannah Johnson's RBI single. The Cardinals cut the Pipers' lead in half at 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Makayla Steffes singled, reached second off Megan McGinn's groundout, and scored off Naleya Bork's single.
Three hits combined with an error and a wild pitch from Hamline resulted in three Saint Mary's runs in the sixth inning, where they secured a come-from-behind 4-2 win.
Rubbelke went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Hamline had five hits, while Saint Mary's had 10.
Natalee Boelk allowed 10 hits, four runs (two earned), and three walks over 5 1/3 innings in the circle for Hamline, before Miller threw the final 2/3 frame.
The Pipers will conclude their 2024 season at Augsburg (DH) tomorrow, Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m.
