SAINT PAUL, MINN.—The Hamline University women's tennis team competed on their brand new courts, located on campus, for the first time with two matches against UW-Stout and UW-River Falls on Sunday. The Pipers broke in the facility with back-to-back 7-0 victories over the Blue Devils and Falcons.
Hamline begins their 2024-25 season 2-0, a feat accomplished for the first time in the modern-day era.Â
"First collegiate wins today for Cora Andersen, Jessica Widmer, Anya Sugden, Josie Schmitt, and Emily Dreger," said Pipers head tennis coach Spencer Jones. "Undefeated day at number one doubles for sophomore phenoms Vanessa Pham and Elanna Kohner. Pham also dominated her two opponents in her first stint at the No. 1 singles spot."
Hamline 7, UW-Stout 0
Hamline secured the doubles point with a clean sweep thanks to Vanessa Pham/Elanna Kohner 6-4 at No. 1, Christine Muller/Emily Dreger 7-5 at No. 2, and Cora Andersen/Josie Schmidt 6-3 at No. 3.
Pham didn't disappoint in her debut at No. 1 singles, where she won 6-0, 6-1. Cora Andersen made things interesting at No. 2 singles, winning an extra-setter 4-6, 7-5, 1-0. No. 3 singles resulted in a 6-1, 6-0 victory for Elanna Kohner, followed by a 6-3, 6-3 decision for Lynn Nguyen at No. 4.
The No. 5 spot saw Christine Muller win 6-1, 6-4, while Anya Sugden rounded out the Pipers with a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Hamline 7, UW-River Falls 0
The doubles point went to Hamline behind a 6-3 win from Vanessa Pham/Elanna Kohner at No. 1, and a 6-1 decision from Lynn Nguyen/Jessica Widmer at No. 3.
Pham dominated 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, followed by a 6-3, 6-4 thrashing from Andersen at No. 2. Elanna Kohner took care of business 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 3 slot. Nguyen made things interesting with a 7-5, 6-3 decision at No. 4, as did Muller by a score of 7-5, 6-2 at No. 5. Sugden won 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
The Pipers will host Carleton at the Hamline Tennis Courts on Wednesday, September 25 at 4 p.m.
