No. 12 Pointers Take Care of Pipers

SAINT PAUL, MINN.--The Hamline University men's hockey team fell to No. 12 UW-Stevens Point 8-3 at TRIA Rink on Friday night.

Hamline falls to 5-11-0, while the Pointers improve to 11-4-1.

The Pointers took an early lead in the first period with Sean Bunting scoring at 2:19, assisted by Matthew Falls. The scoring continued for the visiting team as Nico Chmelevski added another goal at 3:44, followed by a goal from Fletcher Anderson at 7:13, giving the Pointers a 3-0 advantage. The period saw another goal from Dawson Sciarrino at 13:07, marking his 13th goal of the season and extending the lead to 4-0. Hamline struggled to find the back of the net despite multiple shot attempts, failing to capitalize on opportunities, including a power play following a penalty on Dawson Sciarrino.

The second period began with both teams receiving penalties at the start, setting a physical tone. Matthew Falls set the scoring tone with a tally at 7:37 of the frame that widened the score to 5-0. Hamline capitalized on power play opportunities, with Nikolai Dulak scoring at 12:11 and Nicolas Haviar following with another power-play goal at 13:51, reducing the score gap to 5-2. The Pointers responded swiftly with Peyton Hart adding a short-handed goal at 14:23, maintaining their lead at 6-2.

The third period began with the Pointers establishing control by winning the opening faceoff. At 1:52, Hamline's Nicolas Haviar scored an even-strength goal, assisted by Brandon McNamara and Nikolai Dulak, narrowing the gap to 6-3. However, the Pointers responded with a power-play goal by Peyton Hart at 5:54, extending their lead to 7-3. Later, Quinton Hill capitalized on a short-handed opportunity at 15:49 to score an unassisted goal, bringing the final score of the period to 8-3 in favor of UW-Stevens Point.

Nikolai Dulak stood out on the Pipers with a notable performance, registering three points from one goal and two assists. He also recorded a power-play goal. Nicolas Haviar was another key player, contributing two goals and one assist, with one of his tallies being on the power play.  Among goaltenders, Trevor Wong was active,  recording 23 saves despite allowing eight goals in the contest.

Quinton Hill was a standout for the Pointers, having scored one goal and one assist, contributing to a 71% faceoff win percentage. Alec Chmelevski also shone with one goal and one assist, enhancing his offensive presence. Dawson Sciarrino made a significant impact by scoring the game-winning goal. Peyton Hart stood out with two goals, including a power-play goal, and maintained a faceoff win percentage of 66%. Sean Bunting contributed both offensively and defensively, scoring one goal and posting a plus-minus of four, alongside a faceoff win percentage of 62%. Ryan Maguire stopped 35 shots in net for the Pointers.

The Pipers will host UW-Eau Claire at TRIA Rink on Saturday, January 18 at 5:05 p.m.
