NORTHFIELD, MINN.--The Hamline University men's basketball team defeated Carleton 72-61 on the road Wednesday evening, which marked the end of a five-game losing skid against the Knights. That streak dated back to a 65-58 win at Hutton Arena on February 9, 2022. This was Hamline's first road triumph over Carleton since a 71-62 score on February 9, 2019.
The Pipers improve to 7-7, 3-2 MIAC, while the Knights fall to 8-5, 2-3 MIAC.
Hamline 72, Carleton 61
The first half saw the Pipers take an early lead courtesy of
Brendan Ebel's layup at 19:42, followed by
Daniel McCarrell's jumper at 18:10 that made it 4-0. The Knights struggled initially, with multiple missed layups, but Luke Harris narrowed the gap to 4-3 off a three-pointer at 17:50. The Pipers' defense was strong, with
Austin Holt recording several defensive boards and a block. A pivotal moment came when Hamline extended their lead to 36-27 with 1:28 on the clock through a series of successful layups and a three-pointer by
Brendan Ebel. As the half ended, the Pipers led 38-27.
In the second half, both teams scored 34 points. Carleton's Matt Drake initiated a scoring run with a three-pointer at the beginning, contributing significantly to his team's early momentum. The Pipers responded with
Austin Holt's jumper, followed by
Raoul Vaidya's assist, keeping them in the game. Midway through the frame, Hamline began to pull away with a notable scoring streak, highlighted by
Austin Holt's three-pointer and subsequent free throws, pushing their lead to 47-41 with 13:39 remaining. Late in the half, Hamline's
Ethan Wall-Atim and
Dominic Dosmann capitalized on turnovers with fast-break points, extending their lead further en route to a 72-61 victory.
Austin Holt led the Pipers with 17 points, achieving a double-double with 11 rebounds. His performance was highlighted by a strong showing at the free-throw line, making six-of-seven attempts.
Brendan Ebel contributed significantly as well, scoring 14 points and leading the team with two blocks. His efficiency was evident with six-of-nine field goals made.
Bradley Cimperman also made an impact with 15 points and three blocks, while tying for the team lead in rebounds with six.
Ethan Wall-Atim showcased his defensive prowess by recording two steals, while
Dominic Dosmann added to the defensive effort with two blocks.
Hamline shot .528 (28-of-53) from the field, and held Carleton to a .365 (23-of-63) mark.
Matt Drake led the Knights in scoring, contributing 18 points with seven field goals, including three 3-pointers. Spencer Goetz also made a significant impact, scoring 13 points with six field goals. Luke Harris demonstrated strong defensive skills with two steals, seven points, and six rebounds to his performance. Sam Koelling was notable for his defensive play, leading the squad with three steals, while scoring 11 points and securing six rebounds.Â
