SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline (6-6, 2-1 MIAC) outlasted the St. Catherine volleyball team (5-12, 1-2 MIAC) in a four-set matchup at Hutton Arena on Friday evening, securing the victory 22-25, 25-21, 25-21, 29-27.
Hamline opened the first set with a strong start, highlighted by
Grace Bathurst's three kills and
Cameryn Sand's two service aces, establishing an early 8-4 lead. Despite the initial advantage, the Wildcats rallied, capitalizing on the Pipers' attack errors to draw even at 15-15 and later secure a 25-22 set win.
Hamline secured the second set 25-21 against the Wildcats, leveraging a series of offensive and defensive plays. Sand's setting was instrumental, contributing to multiple kills, including two pivotal ones by
Claire Kaups during a critical 5-0 run that pushed the home team to a 16-11 lead. The Wildcats struggled with service errors, which Hamline capitalized on, allowing them to maintain their edge despite a late push from the visitors.
Hamline edged the Wildcats in a tightly contested third set, securing a 25-21 victory to gain a 2-1 match lead. Hamline's offense was led by Bathurst and Johnson, each contributing crucial kills, with Johnson sealing the set at 25-21.
Claire Siems' two consecutive service aces were pivotal in equalizing the score at 16-16, while Sand facilitated the attack with multiple assists throughout the set.
Hamline clinched the fourth set in a dramatic 29-27 finish against the Wildcats, fueled by a late surge that included two pivotal blocks by Bathurst and Johnson. The Pipers capitalized on the Wildcats' errors, including three crucial attack errors by Liz Rosen, which helped Hamline maintain pressure throughout the set.
Mandy Dierks recorded 33 digs over four games, leading the defensive effort. Bathurst contributed significantly with nine kills and added seven total blocks. Sand directed the offense with 46 assists and also served four aces. Johnson led the team in scoring, amassing 16 points through her 15 kills and two blocks.
