NORTH MANKATO, Minn. — Hamline (7-6, 2-1 MIAC) defeated Bethany Lutheran (11-7, 3-1 UMAC) with a 3-1 victory on Tuesday night at the Sports and Fitness Center North Gym, winning by scores of 26-28, 25-20, 26-24, and 25-21.
Hamline's attack was led by a match-high 59 kills with a .256 hitting percentage, including a notable 15-kill performance in the fourth set.
The Pipers battled through a tight opening set against Bethany Lutheran, ultimately falling 28-26 after a seesaw battle that saw multiple lead changes.
Hamline captured the second set 25-20 with a series of well-timed plays, highlighted by
Grace Bathurst's three kills and Sand's pivotal assists. Despite early exchanges, Hamline's defense capitalized on Bethany Lutheran's attack errors.
In a tense third set, Hamline edged Bethany Lutheran 26-24, fueled by a balanced offensive effort and timely defense. Johnson and
Claire Kaups each recorded crucial kills, with Kaups' final point clinching the set. The Pipers showcased a strong blocking presence, with Bathurst and Johnson combining for key blocks. Despite a late rally by Bethany Lutheran tying the set at 24, Hamline secured the set win with a decisive two-point burst.
Hamline seized control early in the fourth set, jumping to a 5-1 lead powered by a service ace from Sand and a key kill by
Siena Busalacchi. Despite Bethany Lutheran's efforts to close the gap, Hamline responded with consistent offensive pressure. Johnson's three kills in the latter stages helped secure a 25-21 victory.
Johnson led the team with 18 kills on 53 attempts, contributing 18.5 points overall. Kaups added 15 kills with a .353 hitting percentage and collected 18 digs. Sand facilitated the offense with 47 assists and supported the defense with 10 digs. Dierks anchored the defense with 25 digs. Bathurst added 12 kills while also recording two blocks.
Kayli Starkey also served three aces in the match.
