SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline (1-0-0) secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Aurora University (0-1-0) on Friday afternoon, highlighted by a dominant power-play performance in the second period.
The game commenced with the Pipers showing early control, winning the initial faceoff and maintaining possession. The team created multiple opportunities, with Grace Delmonico and
Maddy Belisle frequently testing Aurora's goaltender, Macy Blooming.
As the period progressed, Hamline's defense stepped up, with Belisle and
Abigail Chamernick successfully blocking shots from Aurora. The team faced penalties, resulting in power plays for Aurora, but the Pipers' penalty kill unit effectively neutralized the threats, preventing any goals.
Hamline continued to apply pressure throughout the period, accumulating numerous shots on goal. However, the period ended scoreless, with both teams heading into the intermission tied at 0-0.
The second period began with Hamline seizing momentum, as
Iyla Ryskamp won the opening faceoff. Hamline maintained offensive pressure with multiple shots on goal, consistently testing Aurora's defense. At 7:40,
Brooke Klemz broke through with a goal, assisted by
Ellie Newpower and Delmonico, giving the Pipers a 1-0 lead.
Hamline continued to dominate possession, keeping the puck in Aurora's zone and generating numerous scoring chances. In the final moments of the period, Hamline capitalized on a power play opportunity.
Ella Rothe scored a power-play goal, assisted by Ryskamp, extending Hamline's lead to 2-0.
Hamline opened the third period with consistent pressure, creating multiple scoring opportunities. Despite numerous shots on goal, Aurora's defense held firm until Delmonico broke through with an unassisted goal at 3:17, extending the lead to 3-0.
Even with their defensive efforts, Aurora struggled to keep the Pipers at bay. Delmonico found the net once more with 14 seconds remaining, securing a decisive 4-0 victory for Hamline. The period concluded with the Pipers maintaining their shutout and adding two goals to close the game confidently.
Delmonico scored two goals and added an assist to finish with three points, leading the team offensively. Klemz netted a game-winning goal and maintained an impressive plus-minus of plus-three while winning eight of nine faceoffs. Ryskamp contributed with an assist and dominated the faceoff circle, winning 18 faceoffs.
Macy Peterson was also effective in faceoffs, winning 13 of 18 attempts.
The Piper close out the series with Aurora Saturday, November 1 at 3 PM back at TRIA Rink.
