Hamline Secures Shutout in 5-0 Win Against Aurora

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline (2-0-0) secured a decisive 5-0 victory over Aurora University on Saturday afternoon, with a dominant performance that included two power-play goals.


Hamline opened the first period with a strong start as Maddy Belisle scored the game's first goal just over a minute in, giving the team an early lead. The Pipers continued to control the puck, winning multiple faceoffs and maintaining offensive pressure. Despite several shots attempted by Aurora, Hamline's defense held firm, and goaltender Harper Powell made key saves to preserve the lead.


As the period progressed, Hamline had a power play opportunity following a penalty on Aurora, but they could not capitalize on the advantage. The period ended with Hamline maintaining a 1-0 lead, successfully defending against Aurora's attempts to tie the game. The home team concluded the period in front, positioning themselves well for the next frame.


Hamline began the second period with a strong offensive push, capitalizing on a power play opportunity early. Ashlyn Abrahamson scored the first goal of the period with assists from Ellie Newpower and Iyla Ryskamp, bringing the score to 2-0. Shortly after, Grace Delmonico added another power-play goal, assisted by Nina Thorson and Brooke Klemz, extending the lead to 3-0.


Throughout the period, Hamline maintained pressure on Aurora, with numerous shots on goal. Thorson closed the period with an even-strength goal assisted by Abrahamson and Klemz, increasing the lead to 4-0 as the period ended.


The third period began with Hamline maintaining pressure and controlling play. The Pipers' Ellie Newpower and Annabel Mehta each took early shots that were saved by Aurora's goaltender, Macy Blooming. 


Midway through the period, Thorson extended Hamline's lead to 5-0 with a goal assisted by Klemz and Lauren Hornstein. Hamline's defense held strong, preventing Aurora from capitalizing on a power play late in the period. The period closed with Hamline preserving their shutout and maintaining a dominant 5-0 lead.


Abrahamson led the team with a power-play goal and an assist, contributing to a 100 percent faceoff win rate. Thorson also made a significant impact, scoring two goals and adding an assist. Klemz facilitated the offense with three assists, maintaining an 83 percent faceoff success rate. Powell stood strong in the net, recording 10 saves to secure a shutout.


The Pipers will be back in action next weekend on Friday, November 7 with a single non-conference game against UW-Superior.
