Hamline's Rally Efforts Fall Short Against Concordia

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Hamline (8-13, 3-6 MIAC) fell to Concordia-M'head (7-15, 2-7 MIAC) in straight sets at Hutton Fieldhouse on Thursday night, with scores of 22-25, 19-25, 21-25. Despite the loss, Hamline's defense recorded 66 digs, keeping the rallies competitive throughout the match.

Hamline engaged in a closely contested first set against Concordia-M'head, but ultimately fell 25-22. Concordia-M'head's Annie Horan led the offensive charge with multiple kills, while Hamline's Lexi Helmin and Claire Kaups contributed crucial points. Despite efforts to regain momentum, including a timely block by Grace Bathurst, the Pipers could not overcome the deficit as Concordia-M'head secured the set with a steady finish.

Concordia-M'head capitalized on the Pipers' errors to secure the second set 25-19. Hamline struggled with attack errors, contributing to Concordia-M'head's mid-set advantage. Despite Lexi Helmin and Grace Bathurst each recording multiple kills, the Pipers could not overcome Concordia-M'head's consistent offensive distribution, with Betsy Schiltz assisting on numerous key points. Hamline's late push, highlighted by a service ace from Kayli Starkey, was not enough to close the gap.

In the third set, Hamline initially gained momentum with a 5-1 lead, fueled by kills from Britta Lund and Claire Kaups, as well as a ball handling error by Concordia-M'head. However, Concordia-M'head responded with a 6-0 run, featuring a service ace by Annie Horan and two kills by Lauren Pearson, shifting the momentum. Despite Hamline's efforts with multiple kills by Nora Cairns, Concordia-M'head capitalized on attack errors and closed the set 25-21 with a decisive kill by Pearson.

Mandy Dierks recorded 17 digs, leading the defensive efforts for the Pipers. Helmin finished with 10 kills on 21 attempts, contributing significantly to the team's offensive output. Cameryn Sand tallied 25 assists, setting up numerous attack opportunities. Grace Bathurst added eight kills and one solo block, boosting Hamline's point total.

The Pipers will be back in action against Saturday afternoon at 3 PM when they take on St. Scholastica on home court!
