SAINT PAUL, Minn. — St. Scholastica (14-12, 5-5 MIAC) defeated the Hamline University volleyball team (8-14, 3-7 MIAC) in four sets on Saturday at Hutton Fieldhouse, winning 25-15, 26-24, 21-25, 25-19. The Pipers recorded seven service aces in the match.
St. Scholastica opened the set with a commanding 3-0 run, leveraging strong plays from Lindsey Baribeau and Lilli Rechichi to establish early control. The Pipers responded with key contributions from
Lexi Helmin and
Nora Cairns but struggled with service errors and attack errors, which hindered their efforts to close the gap. St. Scholastica's Ava Swangstue sealed the set with consecutive kills, leading to a 25-15 advantage.
Hamline held a narrow lead midway through the second set, utilizing a series of attack errors by St. Scholastica to go up 12-7. However, St. Scholastica responded with an effective offensive performance, highlighted by Swangstue's pivotal kills to tie the set at 16-16. The set remained tightly contested, with both teams exchanging points, but St. Scholastica ultimately secured the set 26-24, capitalizing on Ava Decker's decisive kills.
The Pipers secured the third set 25-21, fueled by a robust defensive effort that included blocks from Helmin and Cairns, contributing to multiple attack errors by St. Scholastica.
Grace Bathurst and Cairns each delivered crucial kills, while
Cameryn Sand's setting facilitated a balanced offensive with two service aces. Despite a late push by St. Scholastica, highlighted by Baribeau's kills, Hamline maintained their lead through efficient execution and timely defensive plays.
Hamline opened the fourth set with a service ace from
Campbell Sims. St. Scholastica responded with a strong service game, including three consecutive aces by Bryn Ziegler, which extended their lead significantly. Despite four kills from Cairns and three from Sims, Hamline struggled with attack errors, allowing St. Scholastica to secure the set 25-19.
Cairns led the team with 18 kills on 41 attempts, accumulating 18.5 points. Sand was crucial in setting with 37 assists across four matches and contributed three aces.
Mandy Dierks excelled defensively, recording 30 digs while appearing in all four games. Helmin added a strong presence at the net with six total blocks, including one solo block and five assisted blocks.
The Pipers finish out their season on the road, with their second to last game being played against UW-River Falls in River Falls, Wisconsin at 7 PM on Wednesday, November 5.
