Pipers Triumph Over Royals With Overtime Victory

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Hamline (1-5-0, 1-3-0) defeated Bethel University (3-4-0, 1-1-0), 3–2, in overtime at their home arena. The Pipers secured the victory with a game-winning goal in overtime and registered 20 shots on net.

The first period began with Hamline winning the opening faceoff, but it was Bethel who struck first at 6:35 with Max Hamstad scoring the initial goal, assisted by Chase Beacom and George Peterson. Bethel maintained their lead despite multiple attempts by the Pipers, including shots by Joe Greniuk and Liam Guerin, which were saved by Bethel's goalie, Marco Duronio. Hamline's AJ Carls received a slashing penalty at 14:13, giving Bethel a power play, but Hamline's defense, including blocks by Calvin Knight, held Bethel scoreless during the advantage. Logan Anderson's tripping penalty at 16:33 provided Hamline with a power play, but they could not capitalize, ending the period trailing 1–0.

Will Matzke scored at 19:21, assisted by Kyle Mortenson and Brock Carls, to give the Pipers an early lead in the second period. This goal marked Matzke's third of the season. Tyler Jordan extended Hamline's advantage at 12:20, with assists from Dom Thomas and Liam Guerin, marking Jordan's first goal of the season. Despite Bethel's sustained pressure and several missed opportunities, Hamline maintained their lead through the period, finishing with a 2-1 advantage by the end of the frame. Keaton French made crucial saves to preserve Hamline's lead, especially during a power play for Bethel following a tripping penalty on Knight.

Bethel tied it up 2-2 in the third period with Peyton Blair scoring at 19:12, assisted by Joe Westlund. Following the goal, Bethel maintained pressure with multiple shots, but Hamline's goaltender French made several key saves. Hamline faced a challenging moment when Jonah Mortenson received a two-minute penalty for holding midway through the period, yet their penalty kill unit successfully thwarted Bethel's power play. Despite the Pipers' efforts to equalize, including a late timeout at 31 seconds remaining, the two team remained deadlocked at 2-2 at the end of regulation and headed into overtime.

In the overtime period, Bethel won the initial faceoff, but Hamline soon gained control. At 1:43, Bethel's Blair attempted a shot that was saved by French. The decisive moment came at 2:15 when Carls scored the game-winning goal for Hamline in sudden death overtime, assisted by Brock Carls. This marked AJ Carls's third goal of the season and secured a 3-2 victory for the Pipers.

A. Carls scored the game-winning goal and posted a perfect faceoff percentage. Jordan and Matzke contributed with a goal and B. Carls added two assists. French recorded 26 saves, allowing only two goals in his appearance.

The Pipers will faceoff against Concordia Moorhead in a single non-conference match up on Tuesday, November 25th in Moorhead before heading on the Thanksgiving break. Puck drop will be at 7 PM.
