Pipers Took Care of Business on Valentine's Day With Victory Over Wildcats

SAINT PAUL, MINN.--On Valentine's Day, the Hamline University women's hockey team defeated St. Catherine 4-1 at TRIA Rink.

The Pipers, who are now unbeaten in their last 13 games against the Wildcats, improve to 14-8-0, 9-6-0 MIAC. St. Catherine falls to 5-16-1, 3-12-0 MIAC.

Hamline took an early lead at 00:41 of the first period with a goal from Averie Martin, assisted by Iyla Ryskamp. The Wildcats responded with a tally by Ana Myers at 11:50, assisted by Aubree McDonagh, leveling the score to 1-1. Throughout the frame, both teams exchanged shots, with several attempts going wide or being saved by the goalies. The Pipers regained the lead at 19:31 with a game-winning goal from Abigail Chamernick at the top of the circle, assisted by Ashley Grabau and Emme Nelson, concluding the period with a 2-1 advantage.

In the second period, Hamline extended their advantage with two goals while St. Catherine remained scoreless. Annika Lindgren opened the scoring at 3:27 to make it 3-1. Later in the frame, at 16:10, Iyla Ryskamp scored with assistance from Abigail Chamernick and Kylie Huseth, bringing the score to 4-1. The Pipers controlled the faceoffs throughout the period, winning the majority, and despite two penalties against them, St. Catherine failed to capitalize on their power play opportunities. Harper Powell made several key saves for Hamline, preserving their lead throughout the period.

The third period saw no changes in scores, with both teams unable to capitalize on their opportunities. It began with the Wildcats winning the initial faceoff, but Hamline quickly took control, frequently challenging the opposing defense. Despite two power-play opportunities due to penalties on Sarah Wangen and Paige Fasching, Hamline was unable to convert, as St. Catherine goalie Addie Oettinger made numerous saves.
Abigail Chamernick led the Pipers with a game-winning goal and one assist. Iyla Ryskamp also stood out with two points, matching Chamernick with one goal and one assist. Averie Martin is notable for her offensive contribution, adding another goal to the team's tally and achieving a plus/minus of +2. Emme Nelson excelled in faceoffs, posting an impressive 84% win rate, securing 11-of-13 attempts. Brooke Klemz also demonstrated faceoff prowess with a 75% win percentage, winning three-of-four. Harper Powell made 17 saves in net for the Pipers.

Ana Myers stood out for the Wildcats with a goal and a faceoff win percentage of 68, leading in both categories. Aubree McDonagh contributed significantly with an assist and added defensive support with one block, registering a plus-minus of plus-one. Raechel Painovich was a key defensive player, leading the team with seven blocks. Goalie Addie Oettinger made a notable impact with 32 saves in her start, despite the team conceding four goals.

Hamline outshot St. Catherine 36-18.

Both teams will square off again at St. Kate's Drake Arena tomorrow, Saturday, February 15 at 2 p.m.
