SAINT PETER, MINN.--The Hamline University men's hockey team secured a 7-4 victory over Gustavus Adolphus in their 2024-25 finale on Saturday in Saint Peter, Minnesota.
The Pipers conclude 2024-25 with an 8-17-0, 6-10-0 MIAC record, while the No. 1 seed Gusties enter the 2024-25 MIAC Tournement at 14-9-2, 10-4-2 MIAC.
Hamline 7, Gustavus 4
The first period began with Gustavus Adolphus taking an early lead at 4:54 with a goal by Jack Kubitz, assisted by Hunter Newhouse and Oscar Carlryd. Despite a tripping penalty on Christian Miller, Hamline did not capitalize on the power play. Hamline's offense surged in the latter half, beginning with a goal by Tommy Carls at 16:00, assisted by
Brock Carls and
Calvin Knight, leveling the score. Hamline continued their momentum with two more goals by
Jordon Halverson at 17:18 and
Jonah Mortenson at 18:24, securing a 3-1 advantage by the end of the period.
The second period began with a series of faceoffs, with the Gusties winning the majority early on. Hamline's
Dallas Duckson scored at 3:37, assisted by
Harvey Dove and
Ryan Brandt, increasing their lead to 4-1.
Carson Simon added another goal for Hamline at 11:18, assisted by
Will Matzke and
Jack Whitmore Jr., but the Gusties responded with Joey Gimberlin's goal at 12:21, narrowing the gap to 5-2. The Gusties scored again at 15:55 with Jack Wineman finding the net, assisted by Luke Delzer, bringing the score to 5-3 by the end of the period.
The third period began with Hamline taking control early as Tommy Carls scored a power-play goal at 1:47, bringing the score to 6-3. Hamline extended their lead to 7-3 with an even-strength goal by
Brock Carls at 6:04, assisted by Tommy Carls and
AJ Carls. The Gusties responded with a goal by Drew Holt at 7:47, narrowing the gap to 7-4. The period was marked by several penalties, including a 10-minute slashing penalty on Kyle Heffron from the Gusties, but neither team managed to capitalize on the numerous power-play opportunities in the latter half of the period.
Jonah Mortenson led the Pipers with a goal and a perfect faceoff win percentage of 100%, contributing to his plus/minus of +2.
Carson Simon was notable for scoring the game-winning goal among his total of one goal and two shots. Tommy Carls stood out with two goals, including a power-play goal, and one assist, making him the team leader with three points.
Harvey Dove excelled in faceoffs with a 60% success rate and added two assists to his record. Lastly,
Derek Becklin contributed notably on defense with one blocked shot and maintained a positive plus/minus of +1.
Jack Wineman led with a goal and a 70 percent faceoff win percentage, marking him as a key performer. Joey Gimberlin also contributed significantly with one goal and three shots, showcasing his offensive presence. Drew Holt, with one goal and one assist, led the team with two points, demonstrating his all-around playmaking abilities. Jack Kubitz added to the scoring with a goal and two shots, while Suchy Jack boasted a strong faceoff win percentage of 66 percent.
