MANKATO, MINN.—The Hamline University softball team opened their 2025 season with a 9-3 loss to Bethany Lutheran, and a 14-0 (5 innings) victory over Minnesota Morris at the Bethany Lutheran Kwik Trip Invitational in Mankato, Minnesota on Sunday morning.
The Pipers begin their 2025 campaign with a 1-1 record.
Bethany Lutheran 9, Hamline 3 (Game One)
The Vikings collected four first-inning runs off five hits, which included a two-run home run and a one-run triple.Â
Their 4-0 cushion was short-lived thanks to Madisen Borek, who came through with a two-run double and scored when Maddie Johnson reached on an outfield error to narrow the Pipers' deficit to 4-1. Josephine Cariveau and Natalynn Lundeen led off the fourth inning with back-to-back singles, and scored off Maddie Johnson's double to cut Bethany Lutheran's edge to 4-3.
Another four-run, five-hit inning from the Vikings in the bottom of the fourth pushed their lead to 8-3. They added another run in the sixth frame, when Kaija Mark doubled and scored off Emily Doyle's single to make the score 9-3.
The Vikings outhit the Pipers 14-6. Maddie Johnson and Madisen Borek each doubled for the Pipers.
Natalee Boelk and Montana Miller each saw time in the pitching circle for Hamline.
Hamline 14, Minnesota Morris 0 (5 innings)
The Pipers exploded with a pair of six-run innings in the first and third, and two more in the fifth to seal a 14-0 victory.
Freshman pitcher Allison Boynton allowed just three hits, two walks, and no runs over four innings of work in her first collegiate game. Dana Rosbacka threw the final inning for the Pipers, allowing just one hit.
Josephine Cariveau and Mikenna Johnson each went 2-for-2 with one run scored for Hamline, who out hit Morris 12-4. Maddie Johnson finished 2-for-4 with one RBI and one run. Savannah Johnson and Jenna Rubbelke each had a two-run single, while Lainey Wier and Gabby Tuhy each singled and scored two runs.Â
The Pipers will return to action on Saturday, March 1 at the Rochester Dome Games. They'll face North Central (Minn.) at 10 a.m., and Buena Vista at 12 p.m.
