MINNEAPOLIS, MINN.--The Hamline University women's basketball team secured a 68-39 victory over Augsburg on Wednesday night.
The Pipers, who've won 10 of their last 13 games, improve to 14-6, 9-4 MIAC. The Auggies fall to 3-17, 1-12 MIAC.
Hamline 68, Augsburg 39
In the first quarter, the Pipers took an early lead, opening with
Yasmeen Abed scoring a fast-break layup after a turnover by Augsburg.
Camille Cummings hit a crucial 3-pointer at 4:51, helping Hamline regain the lead at 5-4 after Augsburg had briefly edged ahead. The Auggies struggled with turnovers, committing a total of eight, which the Pipers capitalized on, particularly with Cummings adding another 3-pointer with 0:13 on the clock, extending their lead to 13-8.
Hamline outscored Augsburg 11-7 in the second frame, building on their lead. The period began with Augsburg's Jada Stanford committing two turnovers in quick succession, with Hamline's
Anna Rynkiewich securing a steal and an offensive rebound shortly after. Hamline's offense was bolstered by
Camille Cummings and
Lauren Cooper, who contributed with a jumper and a 3-pointer respectively. Augsburg's offense struggled with field goals, making only two out of 11 attempts, but they managed to add points through free throws by Katie Manecke and a late layup by Saylor Gallagher. The Pipers maintained control with consistent rebounding, leading to second-chance points and a solid defensive effort that limited Augsburg's scoring opportunities en route to a 24-15 lead.
The third quarter saw the Pipers expand their advantage with a strong performance, outscoring the home team 17-12. Abed started the quarter with a fastbreak 3-pointer at the 9:31 mark, contributing significantly to Hamline's offensive efforts with another 3-pointer with 0:42 remaining. Katie Manecke responded for Augsburg with a 3-pointer, but the Pipers' defense forced turnovers and capitalized on fastbreak opportunities, including a layup by
Kate Trachsel. The Auggies struggled to maintain possession, recording multiple turnovers, while
Camille Cummings and
Josie Wiebusch provided support with key assists in helping the Pipers maintain a 41-27 lead after three quarters.
In the fourth quarter, Hamline outscored Augsburg 27-12, securing a decisive 68-39 victory. Early in the frame,
Anna Rynkiewich's quick turnover recovery and subsequent layup at 9:06 set the tone for the Pipers' dominance.
Yasmeen Abed contributed significantly with a series of key plays, including a 3-pointer and a fast-break layup, helping to extend the lead.
Josie Wiebusch also played a pivotal role, scoring a layup and converting free throws to further Hamline's advantage, while Augsburg struggled with turnovers and missed opportunities, including several missed 3-point attempts by Evelyn Perkins.
Yasmeen Abed led Hamline with a career-high 21 points, connecting on 8-of-14 field goals and 4-of-6 from beyond the arc. She also contributed with four steals.
Kate Trachsel added to the defensive effort with two steals while scoring six points and grabbing two rebounds.
Anna Rynkiewich was a key player on the boards, securing seven rebounds and adding six points.
Camille Cummings matched Rynkiewich's rebounding performance with seven boards and tallied eight points, including two 3-pointers.
The Pipers shot .403 (25-of-62) from the field, and held the Auggies to a .298 (14-of-47) mark.
Amira LaDuke stood out with six points and a team-high of three blocks for the Auggies, also leading in assists with five. Katie Manecke paced the team in scoring with ten points and added seven rebounds. Evelyn Perkins contributed defensively with two steals, while scoring four points from the free-throw line. Saylor Gallagher is another defensive asset, recording two steals and five points to her performance.
Hamline will host Macalester at Hutton Arena on Saturday, February 8 at 1 p.m.
