Softball Runs Past Edgewood, Falls to Chicago in Florida

CLERMONT, FLORIDA--The Hamline University softball team experienced a split in their doubleheader on Thursday in Clermont, Fla. The Pipers first triumphed over Edgewood College 13-9, before falling to Chicago 6-2.

The Pipers move to 7-5 following the split.

Hamline 13, Ripon 9 (Game One)

Hamline opened the game with a strong offensive performance, scoring four runs in the first inning. Mikenna Johnson singled and stole second, setting the stage for Jenna Rubbelke and Josephine Cariveau, who both contributed with singles that moved runners into scoring positions. Gabby Tuhy capped the inning with a two-RBI single, bringing the score to 4-0.

The Pipers extended their lead in the fourth inning with a five-run surge. Gabby Tuhy walked and eventually scored on Maddie Johnson's RBI single. Mikenna Johnson followed with another RBI single, and Abbey Herbert reached on an error, allowing multiple runners to score. The inning ended with Hamline leading 9-3 after capitalizing on the Eagles' defensive errors.

The Pipers added three more runs in the sixth inning. Jenna Rubbelke and Abbey Herbert both singled, setting up a scoring opportunity that Josephine Cariveau and Natalynn Lundeen converted with a fielder's choice and sacrifice bunt, respectively. Abigail Chamernick contributed with a double, driving in another run, making the score 12-7.

In the final inning, Hamline secured their victory with an additional run. Mikenna Johnson reached on an error and advanced to third on a fielder's choice. Abbey Herbert grounded out but brought in Jenna Rubbelke, finalizing the score at 13-9.

Jenna Rubbelke had a standout performance with four runs and three hits, highlighting her offensive contribution while also delivering five assists in the field. Gabby Tuhy drove in three runs, showing efficiency with only one hit and one walk, and added a stolen base to her stats. Natalynn Lundeen contributed two runs and two RBIs with a single hit and a sacrifice hit, while also handling five stolen base attempts in the field. Montana Miller pitched four innings with one strikeout, allowing ten hits and seven runs.

For Edgewood, freshman Allie Draper made a significant impact, recording two hits, including a double, with two RBIs and scoring one run. Senior Olivia Hebert contributed by scoring twice and driving in one run with a double, along with a stolen base and two assists. Junior center fielder Gracie Halfman showcased her speed with two stolen bases, adding two hits and two runs. Senior Camden Shepherd provided defensive strength with five assists at shortstop.

Chicago 6, Hamline 2 (Game Two)

The third inning saw Chicago break the scoreless tie with a series of hits and effective base running, resulting in four runs. A sequence of singles by Hui, Nelson, and Antin contributed to the scoring, ending the inning with Chicago leading 4-0.

The Pipers attempted to respond in the fifth inning as Tuhy singled to center field, followed by Chamernick doubling to advance Tuhy to third. However, they were unable to convert these hits into runs, ending the inning without altering the score.

Hamline finally made an impact in the sixth inning. After Herrig singled, Savannah Johnson hit a solo home run, scoring the Pipers' first run of the game, bringing the score to 4-1 in favor of Chicago.

In the seventh inning, Hamline scored again. Chamernick reached base on a fielder's choice and later advanced to third on a walk by Martinez. Chamernick then stole home, securing a second run for the Pipers. Despite these efforts, the game concluded with a 6-2 victory for Chicago. The Pipers finished the game with six hits and no errors.

Savannah Johnson excelled with a standout performance, hitting a home run and contributing one RBI. Reese Herrig made an impact as a pinch hitter, achieving a perfect 1.000 average in one at-bat, resulting in a hit. Dana Rosbacka delivered two innings without allowing an earned run, striking out one and holding the opposition to a WHIP of .50. Chamernick was effective on the field, scoring one run, hitting a double, and executing a stolen base for an OPS of 1.000.

Dana Rosbacka started the game for Hamline, pitching two innings and allowing just one hit with no earned runs while striking out one. Natalee Boelk pitched 1 inning in relief, giving up four earned runs on five hits and two walks. Montana Miller contributed 2 innings of relief, surrendering one hit and no runs. Allison Boynton closed the game with 2 innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits.

Matilda Nelson led Chicago with outstanding performances in both hitting and fielding, recording three hits and three RBIs. In the field, Nelson contributed significantly with four assists and participated in one double play. Madeline Murphy also delivered a solid game, going one-for-four with one run and one RBI while making three assists from shortstop. Audrey Hui showcased strong offensive efforts, collecting two hits, scoring two runs, and adding an RBI.

The Pipers will return to action on Saturday, March 22 against UW-Whitewater at 10:15 a.m. (ET), and MSOE at 12:30 p.m. (ET).
